Trying to Get Pregnant

Can you ovulate immature follicles?

This has me curious. I mentioned to my doctor today that I have a lot of spotting and that my cycles have went from 28 days to 25-26 since having DS and he said I was probably ovulating immature follicles. He was running behind and in and out so quick he didn't take the time to talk to me about this so it has me curious. I didn't think ovulation would occur if the follicle wasn't ready. I have cramping, spotting, LH surge and a temp shift to confirm ovulation and I ovulate on day 13 (since I've been charting). I figured you all would know the answer to this!

Re: Can you ovulate immature follicles?

  • Yes, it is possible to release immature eggs. However, ovulating on CD13 sounds perfectly reasonable. It's also pretty common for your cycles to change after you have a child. Unless he has other reasons to believe there is a maturity issue, I think it was pretty careless of your doctor to say that to you.

  • @milagros315 I agree considering he hasn't done any kind of testing. I just thought it was odd. I wasn't even there for anything related to that. I have a YI and went in for that and we were discussing my periods.
  • Early ovulation (prior to CD10) can lead to the release of immature eggs. It's related to premature surges in LH and other hormonal imbalances. Immature eggs are either completely unable to be fertilized, or can fertilize and have chromosomal issues. The cycle of my miscarriage (related to a severe chromosomal defect) I ovulated on CD8. We'll never know for sure, but it's possible that that early ovulation led to the chromosomal defects.

Yeah that sounds reasonable. He didn't even ask what day I ovulated. I think CD13 seems fine. Maybe he meant i'm releasing bad quality eggs or something along those lines. I'm not sure, really.

Even if he meant that, how on earth would he even know? Sounds like he's talking out of his ass to me.

  • I agree with the others. Ovulation on CD 13 is perfectly fine. I think he should have really talked to you before throwing things out there like that! It also sounds like your LP is longer than 10 days (also good) Honestly, I think your body is just different after having a baby vs immature eggs like he was talking about.

  • I think he was talking out of his ass too. He even gave me articles on infertility even after I told him we were just starting our 3rd month of trying. I walked out the door thinking "wait...wtf was all of that?"
