Secondary IF

IVF batch?

I'm pretty new to the IVF world including all the lingo and time frames.

I'm on Provera and my last day is Sat. When I talked with the nurse she said if I don't start my period by Nov 1 I'll be put in the next batch which isn't until Nov 27.

1- what is a batch?

2- what do I do between the 1st and 27th? What if my period doesn't come in time for the 27th or if it comes and goes before the 27th? Do they give you another drug?

3- what are some really good resources for information on what to expect at each step? Like what do I expect during retrieval and recovery? What do I expect with each drug and what does it do? Is there one place for everything?

4- How do you figure your conception date? DPO?

All of you seem so knowledgable so I was hoping someone could fill me in.

1)Hmm. I'm guessing she means "Batch of people waiting for IVF" ? I know at my clinic, if they have a lot of people on one cycle, they will start delaying people- but they just put us in a holding period for a few days, which just means we would hold off on triggering for a few days.

2)If you're on provera that should make you start a period. I do not have any personal experience with it so, I'm not sure how to answer beyond - Provera makes you start a period.

    3) I haven't found any one single source, you can try researching IVF and reading various articles, etc. That's what I do. Same for the meds, but your RE should explain everything to you.

    4) Your conception date is the day of your transfer, your due date is based off of that. There are a lot of due date estimators online, just select the "based off conception" option for a specific date.  DPO depends on what day you do a transfer, most places do either a 3 day transfer or a 5. So basically if you're doing a 3, 4 days after the day of your transfer is actually 7pdo. Whatever day you transfer is already "days post O"

    Good luck.

  • Thank you for the information. You helped clear up some of my fog. ;) I'm going to call my nurse tomorrow to get more info on the batching. But your response makes sense. I just wonder how long they can hold someone off.

I did find a book IVF: A Patient's Guide. Of course I dove head first into it. It seems most of the protocols use Lupron and BC pills but I'm not on either just the Provera. And if that's what is going to start my period then why wouldn't my RE have me on Lupron? Guess I don't understand the exact purpose of Lupron.

Have you had a protocol or know of anyone who has without Lupron or BC pills?

If you check out the Infertility board or the Success after infertility board most people have their protocols in their signatures. I check those boards pretty frequently to compare what others are doing. I do know that the protocols seems very different for everyone and for every clinic. My clinic has me doing Lupron.

Do you get your period on your own?

Also I'm confused, you're supposed to be in the Nov. cycle of IVF but the only medication you have so far is Provera? Or you have other medications and you're just not sure when you're supposed to start them? I'm just not sure why if you're supposed to start your IVF cycle in a few days you would still have so many unanswered questions? My RE explained everything pretty thoroughly, so the only question I had left was "How do I manage to stick myself with these needles without freaking out?" and I had to answer that on my own.

  • I'm confused about the same thing so I've called my nurse. I hope to hear back really soon.

I usually get my period on my own however my last cycle I had to take progesterone to start it. Additionally, I don't seem to ovulate without being medicated.

Thank you for taking the time to respond and be so kind. I appreciate it.

Sure, no problem. I hope you get some answers! IVF is so stressful, I can not imagine going through it all, and being in the dark at any point.

  • I did respond on my intro post but just in case others see this one and wonder what the answer was. :)

Nurse just called me back. You were right! The batch is like a holding period to get all other IVFers on the same cycle. If I don't make this cycle then they will put me on BC to hold me off for 3 weeks. And I'm not going to take Lupron because of my low AMH.
