Question about solids

Does the 6 month rule count from birth or due date?

You'd think I knew this already bit I've forgotten.

Re: Question about solids

  • Due date makes the most sense, considering preemies. That said I don't think there's a magic thing about that date, it's just a guideline.

    Perfect thanks.

  • DS seems ready already and isn't yet 6 months. I guess I'm just wanting to know if I'm a horrible mom for attempting at 5.5 months, which would be 6 months based on EDD

  • I started at about 5.5 months with a couple of foods just to try it out. He loved it.

  • Both my kids were a month early and we were told to start solids based on birthday not EDD. I started at 5.5 months for both, maybe a week or so before their 6 month checkup.

I had no problems, I say if they're developmentally ready, go for it.

  • For DD1, I went by cues and just used the month as a guideline. I think she was 5.5 months, sitting up unassisted and interested in food.

  • I forgot about sitting unassisted. Is that a must? He's still unstable but can for short bursts.

DS is 6 months in 2 days, showing the proper cues and signs, but dammit, I'M not ready for this.
Baby food making experimenting commences this weekend. Ugh.

With dd we started with sweet potatoes. Avocado is also a great first baby food.

  • We started around 5.5 months with avocado. It can't hurt to try if your lo seems ready.
  • We waited for readiness. Which for us was picking up food off our plate and putting it into his mouth. Cade did this at about 5.5 months. We then went home and made him some finger foods and the rest is history. Cade's a great eater. Rosie started at around the same time.

  • 5.5 months was the right time for both of my girls. I'm lazy so we did modified blw. Spoon feeding takes to long.

  • We started around 4.5 months...avocado for a couple weeks, then sweet potato if I recall. He did great, didn't slow down in nursing, and is a great eater now. I think each baby is different, just follow their lead
