Blended Families

Kids who fly

How old are your kids? Do they have to switch planes? Who pays (example we pay to us and BM pays to her)?

We are looking at SS flying from now on, as BM does not have transportation, and our order states split transportation. so we are hoping we pay to us and she pays to her. One person paying and the other paying them back is not an option, as BM either will not pay us or force us to pay the entire amount. So we would have to do one way tickets.

Re: Kids who fly

  • SS flies internationally with a family member DH and BM have agreed on as an escort. He has done this since he was five years old. DH is responsible for the airfare for everyone involved bc it's his visitation and the judge said if he wants it, he will fund it.

If you wanted to do round trip, which is cheaper, your airline may let you pay half and then call in the other half of the payment.

  • The kids fly Southwest every time.  It is in our CO that DC is solely responsible for the airfare since he's the one who up and moved across the Country.  They started flying as unaccompanied minors when DS was 11 and DD was 7.  Since DS is now 14, he can't get the unaccompanied minors ticket anymore.  I insist that they have direct flights and I will not allow them to change planes.  No way.  DC has had no problems finding direct flights from CA to TN.  The plane might have a stop, but the kids do not need to get off the plane.

  • Also, if flying is going to be a regular part of visitation I suggest signing up for the airlines frequent flier program.

  • Wendi--he would have to switch planes in Minnesota. I"m glad out CO states DH and BM share travel equally. We have tried to be nice and have bm only travel 3 hours instead of the 7, and it has back fired on us every time. We do have frequent flier miles, and if i booked now for summer we could get a trip for next to nothing. DH was going to drive to pick up SS because we have to go to a wedding 5 hours away the same weekend, and DS and I would fly (16 hour trip with 2 year old is not going to be fun) and meet DH and SS. Gives them time to bond on their trip too. Thanksgiving and Christmas we are just going to have to meet a round trip ticket is over $1000. way too much for us.

I would definitely want that stipulated, that the flight is direct/stops but SS doesn't need to get off the plane. If it says that parents have to share transportation, but doesn't state how, I'm guessing that means both parents will have to agree to what that means.
