4 10's

What are your thoughts on working 4 10-hour days (Monday - Thursday)?  The hours would be 6:30 to 5 and my commute is only 20 minutes.  I am thinking of proposing this schedule to my manager for next year.  Currently I work a flex schedule (WFH 1 1/2 days of the week and leave to pick up my son from preschool on my lunch hour) so I know bringing up a new flex schedule should go over fairly well and I would actually be in the office more than I am now.  What are the pros and cons?

Re: 4 10's

  • With those hours, I think it's doable.  I'd rather work early than late but still - that would be pretty early for me.

  • DH worked a similar 9/80 schedule and we loved it.  He worked 7-4:30 with a 30 min lunch.  The only downside was that I had to do all of the morning routine by myself.  He stopped when I was pregnant with DD because I was so exhausted/sick in the morning, but may return to that schedule soon.  The pros are the day off and flexibility to "flex" hours other days if you have to miss for sickness or doctor's appointments.  The cons are the early/late days and having to rely on spouse/SO to go solo during those times.

  • I'm in the office by 6:30 every morning, it's definitely do-able. And assuming you can get your husband on board with handling the daycare drop off, it would make sense.

I think it matters more based on what type of job you have and role you play. I can get away with working from home on occasion, but not working one day a week wouldn't fly in my industry as people wouldn't be able to fund payrolls and clients would rebel.

  • If you have support at home to do it, I say go for it!! Having one day either alone or with the kids is great. Three day weekends. But again, you'd really have to trust your spouse to get it all done in the morning. Plus those things you used to get done in the morning, need to figure those in too.
