Fire pit

DH and I would like to get a fire pit for outside. I'm debating between getting a normal one and getting one with some kind of heat-proof, child-safe border around it.

DS is 11 months old, and I worry about him pulling up on it or getting too close to it and hurting himself. DH says obviously we'd be watching him closely and wouldn't let him near it. I agree but still don't know if I should go with a more kid-friendly fire pit. Well, "kid-friendly fire pit" sounds like an oxymoron. Anyway, those with toddlers and young kids, do you think it would be ok to get a normal fire pit but just keep DS away from it and teach him that going near it and touching it are no-no's?

Re: Fire pit

  • Can you get a chiminea instead?

  • Loading the player...
  • DH wants to use it to burn wood and sticks that he picks up in the yard, so I don't know if a chiminea would work, but those are still dangerous if a kid touched it, right?

    @pobrecita, yes.
  • A chiminea would work for that.

    Yes, it would be dangerous, but you could, in theory, put a baby gate around it so the baby couldn't get close enough to touch it.

  • But the fire is more enclosed than it would be in a fire pit.

  • We have a chiminea and a fire pit (<-- DH built it). We usually only use it after hours, and if DS is still up we just taught him it's a no-no. If this wouldn't work for you maybe you could create a barrier of some sort around it? Pinterest probably has some good ideas.

    We use the fire pit more for the sticks in the yard, and the chiminea for wine lol. Also I am a huge fire bug. DH calls me a pyro... I want to light all the things on fire!

  • @CinemaGoddess, I like the pics you shared. I was looking at something like this:

    Or this with the tile around it:

    But yours look more safe and stable.
  • This is exactly what our fire pit looks like.
