UO Thursday

edited October 2013 in January 2014 Moms

Is it too early for this? The five hour time difference for all you East Coasters is no fun sometimes...By the time you all wake up, I am half way through my day!

Anyone have something good?

Edited because my grammar sucks and there is probably another obvious mistake I am missing...

  • I can't stand any of the "real housewife" shows .... Mostly because I hate yelling and confrontation so I get really uncomfortable when I tried to watch it!!!

There is nothing "real" about any of the shows. I used to occasionally watch RHWOC and RHWNJ way back when, but it got to be too much. They are an embarrassment.

  • I hate the term cooking when it comes to pregnancy as in "keep that baby cooking longer". The first time I heard it all I could think of was a newborn photo shoot where the baby was in a pyrex dish, so that doesn't help my thoughts.

  • Interestingly enough, I actually have a grammar UO that was on my mind prior to opening this and seeing other grammar UOs. I think the use of "your" when it should be "you're" is the worst of the grammar problems, and because of that, I have a hard time taking someone seriously who continually makes this mistake. I view other misused words/phrases as misunderstandings of the meanings of words or even just misspellings. But to me, it speaks volumes if a person can't perform a simple test to see if they should use "you're." (i.e., replace it with "you are" in the sentence -- if it works, use "you're" instead of "your")
I agree. Also with 'there', 'their' and 'they're'.

My UO: I hate thong underwear and I don't think there is a legitimately classy way to wear it. I'd rather go commando.
@KaitiMac -- I'm confused by the "legitimately classy" part of this. What exactly does that mean? FTR, I'm not a fan of thongs either, but I do have some seamless nude pairs that I wear with sundresses and such. I guess have a hard time understanding how it is somehow classier to wear no underwear than it is to wear some form of underwear, especially with a dress. And just so I'm clear, I don't care if someone wants to go commando under a dress. It's the reference to not being "classy" if you choose to wear a thong that strikes me as odd.

@peanutmuse HAHAHA I could care less about the mistake (Get it....I DO care ;) ) Pretty sure I can chalk that one up to auto correct, but I'm sure you wouldn't have to look hard to find a tonne of other mistakes from me.

    @Amylou333, I like you. :)
You took my teasing really well. I was hoping that you wouldn't be upset about it.
  • My UO (or perhaps rant) is that if you have a guest bathroom on the main floor of your house it is to be used by guests. They shouldn't be using your main bathroom unless there are problems with the toilet in the guest bathroom or it's in use. My neighbor friend insists on using our upstairs main bath and it annoys me!

I have no desire to be a SAHM. I respect people who do it, including my husband who will be a SAHD, and want to punch people in the face when they judge us for this unconventional decision.

I think that's awesome that your DH wants to be a SAHD! My DH would go nuts...but he has mentioned a few times how it would be great if we could trade. Honestly, I felt very judged when I quit my job to stay home..like people thought I was a wimp for not wanting to work or that I was like snobby and rich since we were able to pull it off.

People judge no matter what, you have to do what works for you! My DH's job is demanding sometimes and his schedule didn't work great with my nursing schedule, putting all of the childcare responsibilities on him on days I worked and I barely saw my daughter..I like staying home but I do miss the challenge and bustle of work sometimes. Right now this works for us and that's what matters! Good for you guys for finding something that will work for you!

  • @shannahbee my dog definitely goes where I go, be it couch, bed, etc. I do understand why to some people it comes off as unhygienic but I'm a clean freak so for me, NBD. I will add that I am a bit grossed out by houses that reek of animal.

@kaitimac I love thongs but I hate the "whale tail" that some women get. That part is not classy. As long as it's appropriately hidden like any other undergarment, I don't see why they're trashy.

I guess this is where we disagree -- if I'm going to make a judgment about something being classy, a thong that doesn't show wins over no underwear every time. I get what you're saying overall, I just don't 100% agree.

And in regard to the above quoted portion, I don't think full coverage seamless underwear provide the same lack of panty line as seamless thongs (in my experience) and I am someone who needs to wear underwear all of the time for physical reasons. (Drinking a lot of water keeps me well hydrated everywhere, apparently. Sorry for TMI about peanut.)

But honestly, it doesn't matter to me one way or the other what other people choose to wear (or not wear) for underwear, since it has zero effect on me.

I'm almost definitely the only one that feels this way (cultural differences!)
But I'll never understand why American's say "I could care less" when talking about a situation not cared about.

I COULD care less, means you have the capacity to care less, meaning you do care. So it makes no sense.

If you don't care, surely "I COULDN'T care less" is more fitting.
I.e. There is no capacity for me to care less.

I'm by no means a grammar nazi, just a grumpy Brit ;)

Go back to your tea and crumpets, (removed awful word!!!!)! (My friend is from Mercyside and I make fun like this!)
You're right about this, BUTTT....we have sooo many other strange things we say....we adapted the English language, but make up 1/2 of the stupid pop words in the dictionary that forces them to continually edit it (twerk?---dumb, not cute)...the Brittish sound so much more prestigious!

ETA: "twerk" went to tweak bc it was that dumb of a word.

I want to preface this by saying I am not trying to judge people for their parenting choices, but this is simply my opinion.

I think when parents say that their child/ren will/doesn't watch any TV are being very unrealistic. TV is fine in moderation and there are good educational programs out there. TV shouldn't however be a substitute for parenting.

We rarely watch TV and it has been the same situation all but six months earlier this year when we had a cheap antenna for three channels.

Never had cable, dish, Netflix, etc. About once a week Ds gets to watch a movie. He used to watch more at daycare/family members, and watches at his dad's. We literally don't watch TV.

All of this! I'm not comfortable with even my SIL going upstairs to use my main bathroom but that's because our bedroom is up there and I don't hide or put away a lot of personal and important items like jewelry or bills.  I think it's just a rude house guest thing to believe going up into someone's more personal areas of the house is acceptable but that's how I was raised.

It's not something you would say in a joke to a stranger here.

I think what @ccip82 meant (and please correct me if I am wrong) is the declaration that TV is the devil and that their child would never be allowed to watch TV because there is nothing of value and it is a substitute for parenting. Especially when said from a non-parent. Yes, BIL, I'm looking at you with that one. It's fine to not watch TV just like it's fine to watch TV. @ChuggingWater, your statement offered no judgement, just a statement that in your family, TV does not happen. It also irks parents when it's the non-parents judging decisions of others that they haven't had to make yet. That's super annoying.

I think I'd look silly with mascara-dark lashes on top and blond ones on bottom. Ombré lashes!
To kinda spin off this: I hate putting eyeliner from corner to corner, top and bottom. On other people it looks good but, on me, I think I look too dressy for everyday. I only take it from the outer corner to just over midway. Oh! and I hate lipstick! Love lip stain, but hate the feel of lipstick/chap stick/gloss/etc.

I meant that even if you're wearing one to avoid underwear lines, it'd be better to just not wear anything, since I've seen more thongs riding above pant lines than regular underwear. Not classy. Under a dress makes a bit more sense but still confuses me, because there are way better options - i.e. seamless, full-coverage undies or not wearing anything. I guess it's more because they just seem trashy or unnecessary to me. And hella uncomfortable.
@KaitiMac Yeah, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. First off, let me assure you that my thongs have never shown outside of my clothing - that's just a wardrobe malfunction that's totally preventable. Second, I wear lots of thin-material dressy slacks, pencil skirts and sun dresses and I've tried EVERY style of underwear under the sun. With my bum for a lot of these items the full-coverage or boy-shorts, even when labeled seamless, will still leave me with a VPL. Which in my mind is not "classy" to use your word. So for the sake of fashion...

@LuGal623  - hm. Are you sure she is not snooping through your cabinets every time. This would weird me out to the point of saying something: "Hey, are we missing a towel or soap in the guest bathroom or something?"

I'm lame today - I got no UO of my own other than the fact that I don't care who plays Christian Grey.

  • Ok I know this will be a very UO because of the way pets are treated like children these days... But I cannot stand it when dogs are allowed up on furniture - couches are bad enough but the idea of a dog in bed is just so wrong to me. And no, I don't currently have a dog, but we always had at least 2 at all times growing up, and they were definitely not allowed up on the furniture. They actually weren't even allowed in rooms that were carpeted. And to make my UO even worse, I don't hold the same opinion about cats.

To me it depends on the size of the dog.  We used to have a cocker spaniel - about 30 pounds.  She was allowed only on one chair in the house and never on the beds.  We had to put her down a couple of years ago for health reasons (hers) and we now have a yorkie/shitzu cross.  He is full grown and 12 pounds.  He looks like a rat when he's just had a haircut.  He is allowed on all the furniture and the beds, but he sleeps in his kennel.  Does that make it better?  He is most definitely a dog, not a child.

Growing up our dogs weren't even allowed in the house.  We lived in the country and our dogs were all outside dogs.  They were allowed in the garage, but we had no animals in the house growing up.  I'm still adjusting to the dog in the house thing and it's been 4 1/2 years.
