So FI and I are having an evening small (about 40 people) but formal church wedding. It is at 7pm. We aren't serving a meal because our funds are very limited but we wanted to do something other than just cake and punch. We are thinking of having a dessert buffet for our reception with things like cookies, cupcakes and just miscellaneous dessert items. Good idea or tacky/bad idea? Also I was going to have the invite say Dessert reception to follow instead of just reception to follow so people wouldn't excpect a meal. Is that tacky?

I personally prefer savory to sweet, so maybe you could do the cake, one or two other desserts, and then one or two savory things like cheese and nuts. But ultimately, it's your wedding and your choice! I do agree that letting the guests know that it's a dessert reception would be nice so they can eat dinner beforehand.
I would just make sure you have options for people who can't eat most desserts (gluten free, diabetics, vegan, etc.)
