Bottle issues

We had a terrible time getting DD to take a bottle of BM when she was about 2 months old, but she finally did it. She has been taking a bottle with no issues for over 5 months now.... as long as she's not at home, and I'm not around.

I want to start weaning (she bites me several times a day, not too hard, but I'm still sick of it, and I think my supply is starting to decrease). However, she still won't take a bottle at home! DH says that we should just keep offering it for the duration of one of her feeding times, and eventually she'll get hungry enough to take it. But she's very stubborn and strong-willed, so I'm not sure cutting out one feeding a day would convince her to take the bottle. And then we're talking about cutting out 2 feedings, which I'm worried would dehydrate her (she currently only nurses 5 times a day).

I'm planning on calling the pedi tomorrow to ask his advice, but in the meantime, do any of you ladies have suggestions? Anyone gone through this before?

Re: Bottle issues

  • Have you tried a different type of bottle? Or maybe a faster flow nipple? We don't do bottles very often so idk if I'm much help here :(

  • She takes the bottle fine for other people, just not me or DH at home, so I don't think it has anything to do with the type of bottle/nipple. It's that she's too smart for her own good and knows that when she's at home with me, she nurses, so she will refuse the bottle. I really don't want to skip feedings consistently but I don't know what else to do to convince her to take it :(

  • Will she take the bottle from your DH if you're not in the room, like if she thinks you've gone out or something?  I'm sure you've already tried this, but it's all I can think of..

  • I'm not sure if this is helpful at all but FWIW, DD has started giving us trouble recently with taking a bottle. She's had bottles since birth and really never gave us a problem until the past few weeks. Now she's squirmy and fidgety and all over the place-sometimes flat out rejects it. I have no idea why but I'm wondering if maybe your LO is having some of the same antsyness coupled with knowing you're there to nurse her! They're getting so clever already.....

  • I nurse 5 times a day as well. I always feed after naps bc of our sleep training program. A couple days last week she only did 2 naps which meant 4 feeds. She was fine with it. She's eating a lot more solids now so that probably helped.

  • No help but we are in the same boat.  He never had a problem with bottles until a few weeks ago and then he just decided he was done with them.  He won't drink from a sippy either.
