Trouble with WCM

I decided to introduce WCM very slowly so all last week I gave DS 1 oz WCM with 5 oz formula.  His poops were orangy and mushy like frozen yogurt but he was fine other than that.  Saturday I tried to up it to 2 oz WCM for his bottle at 10:00 am and he puked 3 times between then and his 1:00 pm bottle.  I quit milk and was going to ask the pedi about it at his 1 year appointment in 3 weeks.

Today his morning teacher returned from vacation, she was away for a month visiting family and a sub has been filling in.  She didn't realize he was still on bottles and gave him 100% milk with breakfast and lunch.  Didn't realize her mistake until the afternoon teacher came in and noticed.  They said he didn't puke or get sick.

So...WTF is going on?  Do I try to give him WCM again?  My SIL thinks its a problem with so much fat and to try 2%.  Maybe she's right and daycare gives 2% which is why he doesn't have a problem today?

  • I don't know what the rules are in your state but in WA daycares must give whole milk to two and under unless specified by the parent.

Maybe his belly doesn't do well with the combo of milk and formula? Maybe you could try just milk? I would still bring it up at the pedi appt though.

  • Also, the daycare we used uses the shelf stable milk (it's still whole milk) and that stuff is ultra pasteurized and can break down the proteins in milk. What kind of formula is he on?

He's on the Target sensitive formula.  He's been on sensitive since he was maybe 8 weeks old?

  • DD didn't stomach WCM well at all, and she had also been on a more sensitive formula due to reflux. She's been drinking 2% since she was 13 or 14 months old with pedi approval and without any stomach issues.

Yeah and sensitive is low lactose and low proteins. Which is why he's puking now. Your giving him something with full lactose and proteins. I'd try Lactose free whole milk and see if it's that, if he pukes with that then try goats milk as it's more gentle on their tummies.

  • The pedi appointment is in 3 weeks, should I try stuff before I see her?  Should I wait?  Should I call them for advice?  Not sure.

But why isn't he puking NOW though?  He's had way more milk today than normal and no puke?  I don't get it!

What kind of milk do they give? If it's the shelf stable kind then it's because the proteins have been broken down a little so it's not as bad. If that's the case then try goats milk. As it's full fat with the right vitamins, but way gentler on babies tummies (and everyone's really).

I'll ask tomorrow.  I didn't think to ask when afternoon lady was telling me (plus I don't like her, I just put up with her because I like everyone else and she only watches LO for 1.5 hours)

I'd ask for sure. We're going to do goats milk with Cade once he's closer to 1 year as we already know dairy doesn't agree with him. The next option for us is coconut milk since all it's lacking is proteins, which he gets from other things in his diet anyways. :P.
