I apparently can't pump my own gas

If I hit the enter/cancel button it'd cancel.

If I hit yes, it'd add a three to my zip.

If I did nothing after entering my zip, it'd time out. Pressing the help button did nothing.

I left in frustration.

How the hell was I supposed to pay for my gas? There were no buttons by the display screen.

    Go inside?

DS was in the car and I'm lazy (look!! Excuses!!) and didn't want to buckle and unbuckle when there was another gas station across the intersection.

    Plus I was annoyed.

  • <---bonus about living in NJ. We don't pump our own gas. (It is a law apparently!)

When I saw this title, I thought it was going to be about someone who saw that you were pregnant and wouldn't let you pump your own gas :)

Sorry that happened today. That is frustrating.
    I mainly felt so stupid.

    I couldn't pay for gas.

  • I thought you drove through NJ. I don't like to take DD out of the car either.

Same in Oregon. I know people that come from out of state and get all bent out of shape about it and I don't understand why it's a big deal.

I know. We hate leaving the state for this reason--if we need gas before we go to another local state--we ALWAYS make sure we fill up in NJ.

  • I hate full service.  When we drive through NJ, we get gas because it's cheaper, but I always feel awkward having someone else random pump it for me (despite what I said above).

I'm always like, "Hey, I can do it too!"
    But...the cold...and the rain...lol.

Honestly? If the EVER changed that law in NJ--I see tons of olderish people just not driving anymore. (like my MIL) People that have lived only in NJ and very rarely travel outside of the state--that have never pumped gas in there life; they won't start now.

  • I pump my own gas, but we do have the option of full service at some gas stations. If NJ did away with that law I'm sure full service gas stations would have a booming business!

  • I would prefer if someone else pumped my gas for me but doesn't that actually cause a hold up at the station? Does the attendant have to run in the store if someone has cash?
Nope, they have some cash on them. During lulls they bring it inside because they aren't supposed to have more then 40 or 50 dollars on them. Most people pay with credit cards though :)

  • Nope they don't ask your zip. You hand them the card, they swipe it for you. (just like any other store does)

  • Ugh, I still remember being stuck waiting in line for forever in jersey for gas. There were rows and rows of gas tanks but only two attendants. I was so frustrated. Fuck full service.

And to rondack, I never run in, either. I'd almost rather steal the gas than have to deal with getting DS in and out of his car seat when not absolutely necessary. I feel the cops would understand once they see the gymnastics and fury he demonstrates while I try to strap him in.

  • Gas attendants create a lot of jobs. I'm from California and pumped my own gas for a few years before moving to Oregon and I don't care at all.
