sucking reflex....when does it stop?

When do children lose their sucking reflex?

1. Does this tell you when to attempt getting rid of the bottle?

2. DS is 13 months....just after his birthday he started sucking on a pacifier. Just picked one up one day and sucked it for hours. Prior to this he hated them, would only chew on them. Thought maybe the recent interest was from teething...maybe it is? Opinions on allowing him to have it/start on one past 1 year? He doesn't need it by any means, but it does allow him to be a little more independent, and I can sneak one in his mouth when transitioning from boob to bed sometimes.

Part of me thinks, who cares if he uses one if it comforts him, it's not hurting him, but part of me doesn't want it to become an issue later on, and then have to take it away from him.

Re: sucking reflex....when does it stop?

  • We have DD off all bottles. She only drinks from a sippy. We started dropping bottles in the middle of the day first, then her morning one went and we got rid of her evening bottle last week. She didn't really put up much of a fuss. She's also 13 months.

I don't think that has anything to do with her sucking reflex. She definitely still has that because she is stuck like glue to her pacifiers. That is up to you if you want to give your son a pacifier now. DD uses hers to chew on and she's cutting 2 molars right now. Taking her pacifier away is not a battle I want to tackle now.
