(Lack of) Sleeping

Until about a month ago, DS has been a near perfect sleeper. He squeaks and squawks several times a night, and even becomes in consolatory several times a week. We've tried letting him cry it out, but sometimes he gets himself so worked up he gags on boogers. We don't want to always rush in and coddle him, and become super dependent on us. We think this happens for several reasons.... He has been in a state of permasick from going back to daycare in September. Sometimes he coughs or wekas himself up from being all clogged up. He might have had night terrors one night. He gets less sleep because his brain is working overtime at night to process everything he learned. What can we do? How can we expect things to change back again for the better?
