Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Bassinet vs Rock N Play Sleeper

Hi moms! I'm 33 weeks pregnant with my first and I have been totally set on using the Fisher Price rock n play sleeper beside our bed instead of a bassinet. We got one as a shower gift and I have had great feedback from friends with babies. We took a newborn care and safety class, as this is our first, and the instructor who is an RN said she would not recommend it bc of the slight incline as it will keep our LOs legs scrunched up as opposed to her being able to stretch out. Now I'm second guessing the sleep situation. Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Re: Bassinet vs Rock N Play Sleeper

  • My daughter slept in the RNP til she was 3 1/2 months! It was the only thing she would sleep in! It made me feel comfortable as well that I could see her from my bed without having to look up and over into a bassinet. She slept sooo good in the RNP. She also spit up a lot in the beginning and I felt better that she was on an incline. I also was nervous about her sleeping that way with her legs kinda scrunched up and also didn't want her getting use to sleeping on the incline so by 31/2 months I transitioned her into a extra large bassinet. She is now 6 1/2 months and still in the bassinet!!! We are having a hard time getting her into the crib. So I would recommend RNP just for a few months then to the crib. Good Luck!!!!

  • My baby is still in the RnP and he's over 7 months.  We had a co-sleeper, and he was not having it.  He's mostly in the crib now, but every once in awhile I'll put him in the RnP (next to my bed) if he's extra fussy & I don't feel like going into his room all night long.  He can stretch his legs (even though they hang off the side now!)

Just make sure you use the straps to keep them from flipping over (although you'd have some time before that happens)

I agree with the PP though - you may have one idea of what you want to do, but your LO may have a completely different idea

  • I highly recommend a Moses basket
  • We loved our Rock N Plays, especially in the living room for naps during the day, my boys were only 5lbs when they came home so we ended up folding up a blanket and putting it under their butt so they weren't so slouched and scrunched and it worked great until they were big enough and also allowed them to stretch out their little legs if they wanted to.
  • Thanks for the feedback! Going to get a bassinet and keep RnP for napping so we have some options.
  • Ours is in a pack n play. We have a leacho baby go round bumpered insert that has a foam pad that will help transition her to crib.

Love love love the RNP.  But I agree with PP that every baby is different. My experience: DS wouldn't sleep on his stomach and wouldn't sleep on his back. Even in the hospital, after about 6-12 hours after delivery, I had to hold him in my arms for him to sleep. After 3 days/nights of this, I went and bought a RNP because it's inclined. He slept so well!!! No more having to hold my baby for him to sleep. And it easily moved from the bedroom to the living room with him still sleeping in it so I could still watch him during the day while he napped.

Do keep in mind that the RNP has a 15 lb weight limit and/or once baby starts rolling you need to stop using it.  DS was 15 lbs around 4 months old and was just starting to roll around then too. So I had to transition him to the PNP. Many mama's on my BMB used the RNP and all agreed that baby got at least partially used to sleeping with their legs "up" so when they transistioned to laying flat in the crib/pnp, the babies kept lifting their legs and so some had difficulty transistion b/c of that. Others had difficulty transisition b/c the RNP is so nice and snug so some mama's ended up buying a Merlin Sleep Suit to help the transisition out of the RNP.

FYI, I have Snug-a-Monkey RNP and max weight is 25 Lbs. :-) I only use it during monitored play/nap time
