Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Night feeding wean?

My son is almost 8 months old and still wakes up a couple times at night to eat.. He weighs 20 lbs..he is formula fed.. Had anyone weaned their baby off night feeding? If so.. Why did you do it and how did you do it?

I would recommend that you talk to your pediatrician, but I don't think that he should need to wake up multiple times to eat.  That being said, every baby is different.

My 8 month old (19 lbs) has her last bottle of the night around 7:15-7:30, and usually drinks 6-7 ounces.  Then she usually doesn't wake to eat again until around 5:00AM.  That doesn't mean that she isn't waking up, we just know that she's not waking because of hunger until that time.  So I would be curious to know if your son is waking out of habit, or because he's legitimately hungry. How many ounces is he taking at a time?

  • We did because most of the time he was sttn without it. So it was very easy. On nights when he would wake up completely we would rock him with a binkie and put him back down. I think if they are sttn most of the time then just doing your regular bedtime routine that is after the bottle again should work. I didn't stress over one motn feeding though. I think one at this age is perfectly acceptable.

  • Like everyone said..is he taking a full feeding? If so, he needs the calories. If he's not, than he could just be waking up out of habit. You could try feeding him either more often in the day or with bigger bottles to give him more calories in his day, so he doesn't want them at night. if he's taking less than 1/2 a feeding, i'd try giving him a binky and seeing if that suffices
