Need Advice - Uncomfortable sitting at work!

I cant stand to sit for long periods of time... I work at an office that requires me to be at my desk 80% of the time... I just cannot get comfortable! I have my feet propped up on a box under my desk (I've done that for years) but after sitting for too long my tailbone and hips start to hurt, I also have sciatica problems... I am 22 weeks pregnant. Can someone give me suggestions on what might help!? Pillow, lumbar support, bring my bed to work?

Thanks for help!

  • I second the boppy pillow to sit on to help relieve the tail bone pain. Another lady in my office bought a airplane neck pillow and uses that. She puts the opening towards the back of the chair and thus she puts no weight on her tail bone when she sits.

As for your hip pain, when I was PG with my first I sat on a large Yoga Ball for almost 6 months of my pregnancy. It was the only "seat" that allowed my hips to open up and relax.

  • I know your pain girl!
I have become 100% more uncomfortable in the past 2 weeks. My belly has also really popped out in this time. The baby's movements are harder, and sometimes they hurt. I toss and turn all night long.  I got a heating pad for my back because my lower back pain has gotten worse. I have a small pillow in my car to help support my lower back. I have a joint that's stuck in my back as well as sciatica, so I have a million ways to help it. As much as it may make you sore, you gotta get up once in a while and get moving. Sitting idle will make it worse. Drink lots of fluids.  I don't take any meds at all.  Take a warm bath when you get home. Keep a good posture.

  • WOW! Thanks everyone for your advice! I brought a pillow to work today so I will try that out. I usually get up every now and then but, I will try and get up every hour or so and do a lap around the office... Love the idea of drinking more water. I have been doing that but, @toothpastechica made a good point about it being a win win situation to get more fluide and get up more often to go to the restroom!

Thanks ladies for all of your help!!!

  • I'm having the same issues... I just try to get up and walk about and stretch as often as possible. And when that no longer works? I'm quitting. :-/ but I have some personal issues with the place I work for at the moment.

  • Does standing help?  I work for a furniture dealer and am trying to convince my boss to let me use the adjustable height work surface in the showroom.  If standing does help you, get a few cardboard boxes and put your monitor and keyboard on them for standing height.

Sit on an exercise ball - seriously, best $10 a pregnant woman will ever spend.  Useful after baby arrives too :)
I second that. I had sciatic pain before I was pregnant and have a standing desk. But now standing all day is overly exhausting for me, so I'm switching to an exercise ball. It's wonderful!

  • Hmmm... I wish that I could stand or sit on an exercise ball... but, unfortunately I work for a financial office and clients come in every day... I will have to check with our branch manager to see if this is okay since I work in a professional environment... But, I am definitely going to purchase one for at home use!!! Hope it works!
  • Get a fitness ball to replace your desk chair. You can get one for under $20 at Target and it'll relieve some of the pressure/pain as well as force you to sit in the right alignment.

It's a health related issue, so the boss'll have to deal with it. You can get an exercise ball chair from Gaiam so it looks like a chair. If you weren't pregnant and had a bad back, you'd have to make allotments, no? I work in a super corporate office and ppl here have them.

And as long as you're not being chained to your desk, get up and move around every hour. I have a timer on my computer reminding me to do so.
