If you've had your appendix out....

Did they take it out even though you were not writhing in pain or had a conclusive scan? I had a CT scan for abdominal pain and they found a probable early appendicitis. I have tenderness and general discomfort but I'm not in massive pain and it's even a bit better since yesterday. However, it still sounds like the doc thinks the surgeon will want to take it out.

  • This just started out of the blue and it feels a bit better today but still very tender. Waiting to talk to the surgeon now to see what she says.

  • Thanks...so maybe yanking it now is better to avoid that crazy pain?

  • I had mine out 11 years ago. I woke up during the MOTN thinking I was hungry, ate some chips (we were on vaca at Universal, so we didn't have anything else in the hotel room), then started vomiting repeatedly. Finally got back and had a CT scan to confirm it, then took it out immediately.

If they say it's inflamed, I'd go ahead and get it removed to avoid all the pain. Appendicitis is no joke.

  • I've never had mine out, but DH had his taken out a few years ago. His was about to burst when they rushed him back to emergency surgery.

  • I was in pain and had spiked a high fever, but they couldn't see anything in the ct scan. They took it out anyway, and it was only slightly inflamed. They said the physical exam indicated likely appendicitis, and if it wasn't appendicitis it was something weird they couldn't see so they would just open me up and check.

  • My stomach started hurting pretty bad and I felt awful. My friend told me to ask the ER doc what he thought (I work in a lab) and I said absolutely not since it was probably something embarrassing. Nope. It was appendicitis. I was going into surgery by the time I was supposed to be off.

I just happened to be at work, because I would have never gone in for that. Doc told me it was a crazy early catch... and that I have enormous ovaries.

Also healing from that was a bitch. Way worse than my gallbladder. Sorry bro.

  • Yank that sucker before it ruptures.  The surgery will be laproscopic and easier to recover from. I had an open appendectomy to remove my ruptured appendix 10 years ago.  I ended up spending 4 days in the hospital after the surgery because I required antibiotics to clear up the infection.  I was lucky that I did not need a post op tube in my gut to drain the infection. I would rather give birth again than have appendicitis.

  • Ok, so it's coming out. I had 4 doctors all in disagreement. The ER doc from yesterday who I really like said wait as did the surgical resident but the sr. Surgeon and other ER doc said pull. Oh I am so conflicted and what's worse is I'm totally on my own here. DH is at work still...

  • Yup. Mine was leaking and had been hurting on and off. It wasn't hurting when they decided to take it out though. Glad you're getting it out. It caused me misery for awhile.

  • It's still infected. I think the sooner the better. I think it will suck less if you get it over with.

  • I had mine out while I was pg with DS. It was done laproscopically, and the recovery wasn't too terrible. Good luck to you!

  • Had mine out 20 years ago--it hurts to write that--but it hurt like a bitch and I started vomiting some really awful stuff.

If they can get it out before all that happens, you'll be better off. Best of luck!
