Walker?

Had anyone bought one of these? I heard they aren't that safe or maybe that's old news...

My sitter 3 days a week needs some relief from carrying and floor time and the pack n play which is to small for his ever growing curiosity. I'm just wondering if any of you ladies have purchased one and was it a good buy. TIA!

Re: Walker?

  • I've heard they're not recommended anymore because they can deter certain motor skills when learning how to walk. Walking in a walker is much different than walking regular, so they night not walk as early as they could on their own. Maybe try an excersaucer or johnny jumper. I don't think those would do the same since they're not trying to walk, but I haven't seen that for sure

  • We have one and LO loves it! I have also heard what PP read, but I make sure to also practicing walking with her regular too! I had one when I was little and walked at 7 months, can't be too bad! OP, the reason they were deemed unsafe, is because parents were not being responsible with them. Example, falling downstairs, in pools, not doing baby safety things in areas they could now reach, etc.

  • I got one at a yard sale.  DS loves it!  He is able to scoot all around.  It lets him explore things from a different perspective.  I had to baby-proof everything he can reach that that level though.   I don't have stairs so I wasn't concerned about the risk of falling and I make sure he gets lots of floor time.  I think its fine in moderation.

  • We were told by the pediatrician that they're not safe - she said she's seen a lot of femur breaks and head injuries from falls. Not so much down the stairs, but kids trying to pull themselves along and falling over. She also mentioned that it gives the kiddo a false sense of stability when they do try to walk and kind of holds them back from learning on their own.
That being said, we have one at home that my MIL bought for us and she has one at her house for when she keeps DS. I would rather him have floor time with his toys than be sat in a walker, so we made the choice and asked her not to use it. We sent a jumper instead.

For us, we feel like he's safer in a Jumper/Exersaucer that's not mobile. It costs a little more money to get, but in the long run that's potential for less injuries/doctor bills. Look at trustworthy second-hand stores for a used one (or ask a friend/relative to borrow).
