Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

how many words does your 16-18 month old have?

My son is almost 17 months and really isn't talking much. Today when I picked him up from daycare his teachers mentioned he doesn't talk much compared to the other kids in his class.  I know this post has been on here before but just wanted to try to see what others had to say.  Right now he can say the following: mom, dad, dog, duck, baby, eyes, hi.  He only says hi and dog without being prompted. The others we have to say "r, can you say duck?" and he will say it.  We ask him to say many words most he won't say anything back, we read to him numerous times a day and talk to him all the time to encourage talking. He understands everything we say to him...his receptive language in my opinion seems very good.  He has another appointment at 18 months which I will talk to our pedi then based on his words at that time.  But anyway, just curious, what's your LO's age and how many words?  Do they talk without being prompted?  I am not super concerned and think he's doing fine, but correct me if I am wrong here...

Re: how many words does your 16-18 month old have?

  • DD is 16 months and has said bye bye for at least 4 months but doesn't say any other words. If she doesn't improve significantly by 18, we will likely pursue speech therapy but even if we go that route, I am not that worried. Some kids are just late talkers. If for some reason she does have a delay, I know early intervention is important.

  • DD is 15 months and says about 15 words. She is a talker though and babbles all day long.
  • a lot. and a few 2 word phrases as well.

  • DS is 18 months and he has probably 30-40 words/phrases. He only had maybe 10 words for a couple of months, then suddenly about a month ago a huge word explosion. Now, he tries to repeat things we say all the time so his vocabulary is growing everyday.  So, even if your LO doesn't have a lot of words yet, he could have a similiar language explosion. I think I've read the 18 month mark is when that often happens.

  • DD is 17.5 months and has a lot of words and phrases.

  • My DD is now 19 months and only has 6-8 words. She was evaluated by EI yesterday and qualifies for services. They will work on vocabulary with her. She doesn't need a speech therapist bc she doesn't have any oral motor problems. Like your lo, her receptive language is excellent, but for whatever reason the words aren't there. My pedi wasn't concerned but I was and I'm glad I pursued it bc she does qualify for services.

  • Boys tend to be a little later with language development.  DS was barely saying any words, but he signed and had great receptive language skills, communicated his needs, etc.  At 17 months, he had a huge language explosion.  It started with him repeating every word I said, just out of the blue.  Within a week or two he had hundreds of words and started talking in sentences.  It was crazy.

I should add that DS was less verbal at daycare than at home, so that might be part of the issue for your son.  By 18 months, he knew all his colors, but he had not said any of them to his teacher.

  • My DS says lots of words, both prompted and unprompted. But I also have friends who had kiddos (especially boys) who really didn't say much until closer to 18-24 months. I wouldn't be worried. Just keep talking to him, labeling things for him, etc. He has some words, understands when you're talking to him, and repeats things when you ask him to. He may just be shy at daycare (maybe other kids are loud and he just is more of an observer). It sounds like he's right on track to me :)
  • I don't think you should be concerned, either.  My LO is just starting to use words more consistently, and it's only a handful (he's 18 months), and our ped said he was just fine.  I brought it up at his 18 mo appointment because I had noticed, just like you, that there were kids at his daycare who are really jabbering away and I just wanted to get some reassurance that he was doing fine.  I wasn't super worried in the first place because I know he understands language, responds to commands, etc.
  • I don't want to sound negative but my DD was just diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (at 32 months) and her receptive language is and has always been good.  She understands everything but she has a motor disorder that prohibits her from producing the right sounds to make words.  At that age she only said dada.  I don't believe this is what your DS has I just wanted to make it clear that good receptive language is necessary for expressive language.  But just because it's there doesn't mean expressive automatically follows.  Listen to your daycare but follow your gut.  You know your child best!
  • DS took forever to start talking and when he did, it was just a couple of words.  He really started talking after he turned 2.  DD, on the other hand talks, started talking MUCH earlier and talks ALOT. Too many words to count.  She is a parrot so I have to be careful about what I say!  Every child is different.  You cannot compare kids because they all develop at different rates.

  • DS1 doesn't say any words, but can do the sound of a lion.  DS2 says about 7-8 words without being prompted.  They are both in programs per the pediatrician's request.  They were assessed at 15 months & are just starting their programs.  I wasn't ever concerned, but don't think it could hurt.  It's tough not to compare to others, or siblings.

  • DD just turned 19 months.  She has close to 100 words.  All kids are different.  I think my pedi said 20-30 words by age 2.  Maybe your DS just needs more time.

  • Is uh oh a word that is counted?  If so...that's what my DD says.  lol  DS isn't quite there yet but sometimes says no but it's not in any sort of context.
Both babble nonsensically quite frequently.  They are 15 months.

  • I don't think you need to worry. If he wasn't speaking at all, then yeah maybe, but your LO was quite a few words. DS said like 3 words at a year old, and not a whole lot more at 15 months. I was so eager for him to talk then BAM at 18 months he took off and HASN'T STOPPED SINCE. Every kid is different. I think in the next couple months he will probably take off. It seemed to happen overnight for us.
