I hate skype (rant)

We don't live near any family, so I used to be totally excited by the idea of our parents getting to see their grandkids on skype, but...seriously.  Between DH's grandparents, his mother, his sister, and my mother, it's always someone wanting to skype and DD is only 2 and doesn't really do anything for the first 10 minutes of a call but stare at them, and all they do is try and make her do tricks for them on the camera. "Sing twinkle twinkle!  Can you blow popsie a kiss?  Can you dance for me?"  Not to mention how hard it is to even find a peaceful 20 minutes where DD and the baby are both fed, awake, and happy and how little I want to spend that forcing them both on my lap in front of the computer.

I hate it but I feel like such a jerk saying no.

wow! 10 minutes? that's a long time. we usually skype for about 5 with my nephews (3 and 18 months) every couple of weeks. my H skypes with his mom maybe once a week so she can see Grace.
Yeah.  I'm blessed with an LO who is totally happy to sit still for LONG periods of time, but in this case it means everyone stays on skype forever when I really need to make dinner/do laundry/clean up/etc.  I'd say average time is about 20 minutes before she wanders off.

  • My in laws were all about it for awhile but they don't do so good with the technology. I was thrilled when they stopped claiming they were going to get it setup "next week."

  • I just followed DS around with my phone, using the skype app. I had him show all the toys. And after ten minutes I say, "oops! Got to go XYZ!"

Or just don't answer. You don't need to skype with everyone every week.

  • Couldn't you just sign out when you do not want to talk? If they call so that you can skype just say you are unavailable at the time.
I'm always signed out.  People call and ask.  I often am unavailable and say so, and I don't skype with everyone once a week, but it just feels like someone wants to skype all the time, you know?

  • personally, I find it easiest to take vido of LO on my cell phone, posting it to FB and that is how we are currently doung it. With Sype, will try have Gmas read favorite stories to LO when she is a little older.

Oh, ok. I only Skype with my mom and aunt. I usually post updates about DD on Facebook. I made a group just for my family on there. They get to see a lot more pics and basic updates than I share on my regular timeline.
That's a fantastic idea.  Then I could appease my family without overloading everyone else!

  • We don't make him sit still, we spin the computer around so the camera follows him.  My parents know what I look like and the kid only wants so stomp on the laptop anyway.
