Clapping/Waving

Does anyone know at what age babies typically clap and wave? Or is your LO clapping and waving? We have been working on it, but DS hasn't really gotten the hang of either just yet. He gets excited when we clap and say "Yay" and sometimes he claps two toys together, but not his hands. He is crawling all over the place and walking along furniture so maybe he is just focused on moving around right now instead??

  • closer to 1, DD doesn't do any of that yet.  She waves her arms when excited but not really associated with saying good bye.

  • We're waving 'hi' to just about anyone/thing that walks by now, but still don't understand the concept of bye yet. I got a couple of claps out of him, but nothing consistent so far.

  • DS just started doing this.  He isn't waving consistantly, but has done it several times when someone waved to him.  And he doesn't always clap when I clap.  It is very cute though. I'm excited because it might mean that he will start signing back to me soon! :)

  • So far DD has been clapping now for a couple of months, she loves the sound! She hasn't been waving at all though, I guess making noise is just more fun :P

  • She is clapping. She waves only when excited. Waving was one of the questions at her 9 month appt.

DD started clapping and waving a few weeks ago. She does it all the time now! I'm not sure she really understands the wave because she often waves at nothing :P She also claps in the morning when I go to get her out of her crib, that's always a nice way to start the day :)

But as for when they are supposed to these things I think it all happens at different times. She was a late roller but now she is really taking off with motor skills and imitation. It just depends.

As far as the clapping DH really worked with her on it. She started out just banging her high chair and then he (well and me too) kept showing her the clapping motion and after a little while she picked it up!

  • At our 6 month developmental check, which we have because DD was born in 8 weeks early, they asked if she could clap and play patty cake.  She needed to do this to get rated as 8 months socially, but she wasn't so she was rated at 6 months.  Now she is 9 months (7 adjusted) and she still does not clap and I can't imagine her playing patty cake, but she does wave bye and say "hi" at appropriate times.
  • DD has started clapping over the past week. No waving yet.

  • DS claps and waves, but not always on demand. He claps at the funniest times: when I come in to check on him while he's crying in his crib at 4 AM, after a good nursing session (thanks, bud!), when we put his tray on his highchair and he knows food is coming. He just started playing peekaboo with a blanket- he raises it up over his head, I say "Where's baby?" and he lowers it and claps. It is freaking adorable.

Same here! I think my DS just likes to make noise ;)

  • dd has been clapping for a while, and then she started to way and say something that sounded like hi......then a couple of weeks ago, she started to say something that sounded like bye when waving as someone was leaving...
i'd like to think she "gets" it.....
and my mom is right, i should be writing these things down....maybe at about 7 months or so? and then around 9 she started to do bye...
she does love to clap though...and sometimes if she's on my lap, and i clap, she'll grab my hands and make me clap more

  • DD waves in response to waving, and also to anyone or anything she thinks might wave back... i.e. tv, pictures, etc. She claps but not so much as a good job thing, but when she's happy. The clapping is still uncoordinated.

  • DS has been clapping since he was about 8 months. I said "yea!" to him one day and he just started clapping. He does it all of the time now, but he can't waive yet. In fact, when I waive good-bye he just laughs and claps...which during more hormonal times of the month makes me sad. LOL.

  • DD LOVES to clap. She claps pretty much all the time. It's pretty adorable. She doesn't wave yet though.

  • my daughters will be 10 months on the 28th. One has been clapping for almost a month, and one just started clapping last week. One will blow kisses, but not wave. My sons didn't do these things until 11ish months.

  • DD has been clapping for a while now. She could clap before she could crawl. She just started waving consistently about 2 weeks ago. Only bye though. She waves bye to me in the morning at daycare, and bye to the daycare teacher when I pick her up. She does both of those without prompting, so I think she gets the concept.

  • He has been clapping since 6-7 months and waving at familiar faces it you say bye bye and wave at him for about a month. He just waved bye today without being waved at, just when my mom said bye to him.

All babies have their strengths and weaknesses, so to speak. More like what they like to focus on. My LO still hadn't gotten belly off the floor crawling down very well yet.

  • DD has been waving for a couple of months. They always wave bye bye at DC so she picked it up really quickly. We've been working on clapping but nothing yet.

  • DS doesn't clap or wave yet either. DH taught him to give 'high-fives' so he'll do that when prompted. He loves it when I or anyone else claps but has yet to do it by himself. Waving he looks confused, it's not something we do that often but maybe if we start he'll pick up on it.
