CoffeeCoffeeCoffee

Hello all! So I am preggo for the FIRST time (eeee!) and am working on diet regulation. My biggest issue thus far (I am roughly 4w 6d) has been cutting back on caffeine. I am a night nurse so my typical routine was 8 oz when I woke up (around either noon or 3 depending on if I had worked the night before) and another 8 oz at 1 am on the nights that I worked. I have been through one shift and attempted to muddle through without anything and it was quite the challenge, filled with much head-resting-on-desk activity. My OB is VERY anti any caffeine and is encouraging me to cut down to my intake to zero (

  • My husband is cutting out caffeine along with me. I love my coffee. But I love my teamwork with the hubby more!

  • I had withdrawl headaches on day 2 that were migraine strength. After that, have been pretty good. Switched to tea which isn't the same at all, but is a warm beverage in the morning.
Make sure you really hydrate - that will do the most for the headaches.
    Congrats too!
  • @AnnaKaie, that is sweet of him!

I'm allowing myself 1-1.5 cups a day and enjoying every last sip of it.

I haven't actually talked to my OB about it yet, though.  It might change when I do.

  • I think it's 2 8oz cups that are okay. I've been making my own cold "Starbucks" fraps so I can have four cups a day, instead of two. :P I add 4oz coffee to a bottle, fill the rest with milk, add a little sugar (white or brown) and a dash of vanilla extract.

It gives me that nice steady caffeine flow that I need during the day. And honestly, if you need more than the recommended amount one day and not the next, it's not going to cause your fetus to grow extra limbs.

I drink 1-2 cups of coffee a day and will continue to, though as I was drinking it today I felt very nauseous.
  • I also work as an overnight nurse and tried one night without coffee. Not happening! I used to have a cup at the beginning of my shift and then one after so I could stay up to do homework. I cut out my cup after work and don't have any coffee on the weekends, just my one cup at the beginning of my shift.
  • Yep, there's zero proof that caffeine actually affects baby, they just recommend keeping it below 300mg (though some heard 200mg), just in case.

  • My OB said caffeine is fine - you can get caffeine from soda, coffee, chocolate - it doesn't matter, as long as you're not over doing it. I however have cut out most of all caffeine just to see if I could do it. I did have a 1/2 caff Starbucks drink the other day and a chocolate bar on a different day and it hasn't been too bad.

I think all doctors are different - she also told me that the whole processed meat thing is just silly. The only way you would get sick, is if the meat was bad, and if it smells funky, don't eat it. I guess I have a really cool OB, and she makes me feel so much more relaxed about all of this. I think too many people over think things and read too much online. I would just do what you are comfortable with! Congrats to you by the way!!

I used to be addicted to coffee, like having an entire pot+/day. When I found out I was pregnant I cut it down to 2 cups, 1 in the morning and 1 for an afternoon pick me up. However, since hitting 6 weeks and having the morning sickness kick in I haven't been able to touch it. Just the smell of coffee brewing is enough to send me running to the bathroom.

  • I was told zero caffeine (the tiny bit in chocolate is OK unless you're eating like 100 Hershey bars) until we hear the HB, then 200mg/day is OK.

  • I like my caffeine. I am not even a cup of coffee every day type of person, but I do enjoy soda and sweet tea and the occasional coffee. I think I will allow myself to splurge every once in awhile and have some caffeine, but for the most part I am trying to cut it out too! ugh...we are in this together!

  • I tried to give up coffee altogether and had the worst headache. I used to have a large in the morning and a medium in the afternoon. I've cut back to just a small in the morning. I don't get the headache and still enjoy my morning routine. The afternoon one has been cut out completely, which is fine; it was more for taste anyway.

  • I am also a nurse working 12 hour night shifts. It's so hard!! But I've been having half a cup to start and then mid shift the other half or a cup of hot chocolate. My floor has been so busy lately that I haven't had time to sit much. Keeping busy helps

Um, this isn't true.  Listeria can survive at cold temperatures (like in a refrigerator) so eating it without heating means you could be ingesting Listeria, which is the risk.  Meat that has just been produced or cut at the deli can be contaminated with Listeria without being "bad" or "smelling funky".  That being said, I eat cold, unheated lunch meat on occasion.  The risk is very small but it is there.  It's just important to be informed on what the real risks are.

I'm side-eying your OB who obviously missed a micro class or two...

If we wanted to dig in, basically everything out there is bad for us in some way. I'm just saying, I think that nowadays, we tend to overreact to things. Look at our parents, they did a lot of things we are told not to do now and we turned out just fine. It's like a 20% chance that something could go wrong...it's a higher chance that I could get in a car accident on my way to work.

  • I used to drink at least 2 cups of coffee and day. Since I found out I am pregnant, I've completely cut my coffee, and replace it with a cup of tea. It's tough, cobsidering I am extra tried these days. My OB said one cup of tea or coffee and day is fine, just don't overdo it. As far as lunch meat, make sure to heat it up. I know the risk is low, but you always want to be cautious and not risk the little life in you. Everyone approaches it a little differently. But I figure it's worth sacraficing 9 months for my little one.
