Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

At my wit's end - is it normal for them to be sick THIS much?

If you had asked me a few months ago, I would have said that DD is pretty healthy, a very high energy kid with a great appetite. In the past month, though, she started out with a nasty cold. She got over that, and then about 10 days ago she came down with a fever of 102 that lasted for 3 days (no other symptoms we could discern than generally feeling tired and cranky). The fever finally broke a week ago, and then 2 days later she got a rash (doc said it was roseola, but she already had it a year ago!). Then on Thursday night (the next day), she started getting diarrhea. It was awful on Friday and burned her poor bum. This weekend it was better (only pooped 3x each day) but still not even close to normal, and still isn't. To top it off, on Saturday night I heard her coughing through the monitor. She *never* coughs unless she is getting a cold, but we haven't seen any snot. The coughing came back again last night only worse, and it sounds just like croup. Once she is up and about she is totally fine and running like a maniac, but you can hear raspy breathing sometimes. No runny nose or cold symptoms whatsoever.

WTH is going on? Of course we will call the doc when they open, but have you ever heard of a string of seemingly unrelated illnesses like this? I am starting to get worried. She has a nanny but sees other kids in classes and at the park, but even the girl we share the nanny with twice a week only got the cold and not a hint of this other stuff. To top it all off, we are moving tomorrow...

  • Any illness can put a temporary stress on the immune system, so it makes sense if the immune system is already stressed, they can be more susceptible to other illness. It sounds like your LO has had a run of bad luck. I hope she feels better soon!

  • My DS had the same run of symptoms when he started day school back in April, I swear the kid was sick for a straight month.  Unless the weasing (dr. called it stryder) is constant they told us not to worry and that eventually he would kick it, unfortunately for us that last bout of croup did turn into constant stryder and to ER at 2AM we went, but a week later DS was fine.  Hope your DS feels better soon, that was a tough couple weeks for us.

  • if her immune system is compromised you may want to go ahead and give her a flu shot too just in case... geez.  Sorry about that.  My son was the same way last winter.  Hoping for a better season this time around.

  • Not to scare anyone but I don't want anyone else to suffer through this: my poor niece was sick for several months with cold symptoms, infections, diarrhea, you name it! No one could figure out what it was. They finally went to see a specialist (not sure what kind) and it turned out one of her colds had turned into asthma at some point. The asthma was pretty severe by the time they figured it out but once they began treating it, EVERYTHING got better! I'm not sure how its all connected but I guess it makes sense that if you are struggling to breath, other body systems might not be able to keep you in tip top shape. The doctor also said that she should grow out of it because of how she ended up with it.
