Help with Harriet

Hello! I need some perspective on the name Harriet. DH likes very traditional, and I go for unique and old fashioned. He is from a country where the name is much more common, so it fits both our bills, but because he's unfamiliar with the US and I'm so close to the name, I'm wondering what sort of response our potential daughter may face with her name. MN will be Isla (pretty set in that sue to family link), so Harriet Isla (one Syllable last name). TIA!

Re: Help with Harriet

  • I hate it, sounds like a good pick for you but I personally would go by my mn (love Isla) and be jealous of my friends with 'prettier' names.

  • I like it, traditional/established, familiar for spelling/pronunciation, and underused. Nothing to dislike here IMO

  • I don't know a Harriet in real life, and I think it would be quite fresh on a baby.

  • I love Harriet. My H doesn't like it as much, so it's low on our list but I think it's fantastic. I like Hattie but I also like it with no nn. Plus, Harriet the Spy is such a great book!

  • My aunt is a Harriet. She's always hated her name and got teased in school (hairy Harriet and variations).

  • I love it and I fought HARD for that name for DD2.  I'm ultimately glad we went with Tess because it suits her well, but I think Harriet is a great name.

  • Not a fan. I think of hairy Harriett and Harriet Winslow from the show Family Matters.
  • I Love the name Harriet. I envy other peoplegetting to use it.

  • I LOVE Harriett.  I'm trying to get DH on board with it for whenever we need a girl's name.  It was my great-grandmother's name and is my mother's MN.  I'm pushing for Harriett Ruth for us (DH's grandmother's name, too), but he complains that it's too "old fashioned" sounding.  I think it's classic and Harriet Isla sounds lovely.

That was my first thought too. I think the teasing possibilities are too high, on top of simply not liking the name. Love Isla.

  • I love Harriet/Hattie/Etta.  I like how classic it sounds, as well as the less formal nicknames.

  • Love Harriet. In my top ten. My strongest association is Harriet Vane from the Dorothy Sayers mysteries. Think the nn Hattie is cute, too. Goes well with Isla. Fits your style. Do it!
