Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Lotioning baby

My baby is a little over a month old, he was born a month and a day early. I've been bathing him 1-2xs a week for the past 2 weeks but haven't been putting any lotion on him afterwords bc he still seems to be shedding. Should I still be putting lotion on or should I wait until his skin appears to stop shedding. It's pretty much just on his head now.

Re: Lotioning baby

  • Don't put lotion on now...my pedi says to wait until they are a a few months, and even then, you don't want to use it too much..only as needed/where needed

  • That is what I was thinking! Thank you :)
  • For what it's worth I have never once used lotion in the 10 weeks of DD's life and her skin is still as soft as the day she was born :)
  • I haven't used any lotion on DS and he's turning 3 months old in a couple days. Like PP's kid, his skin is still newborn soft :) Of course, it's really humid here which helps. It took awhile after moving here (Georgia) from NM for his skin to stop flaking.

  • I wouldn't use lotion. Our LO is just under 7 weeks and we used lotion on him and he instantly got heat rash so we stopped the lotion and it's instantly better! I wouldn't worry about the lotion yet!

  • We use organic coconut oil. It works really well. You can find it in the cooking section.
  • My LO is 7.5 months and he was lotioned up from the first few weeks.  Yes you have to be careful of skin allergies and if you are very worried call your doctor.
  • My LO is a month old and has been lotioned from day 1. I love the smell of baby lotion and she loves the massage she gets when its being applied! WIN WIN SITUATION!

  • We started lotioning once her stump fell off and could take baths at 3 weeks. She also enjoys massages with the lotion. Her skin is nice and supple. :)
  • I've used lotion since DD was about a week. No issues here and the massaging after a bath calms her right down (she hates bath time at the moment) Whatever you're comfortable with :)

  • We have been using lotion since week 1... everything is fine and she loves it too!
  • Ped said to wait till they stop shedding to use lotion and we only use lotion because ped recommended it for his very dry skin or else I would not use.
  • We use lotion for our DD bedtime routine.  We use organic lavender lotion it smells so good and lavender is supposed to be calming.  She loves getting a little massage with her lotion.  We do not put it on her face or hands though and we only use a little bit.  We have been putting lotion on her since after her cord fell off.
  • I use lotion as needed. But, mainly, I use badger baby balm on her dry skin. She gets dry super easily since we live in a cold desert.

  • We lotion twice a day, bedtime and in the morning. We had to at first because DS was six days late and super flaky. He still has pretty dry skin so pediatrician suggested keeping him lotioned.
Plus, it's become part of our routine, and he gets a mini massage. Win all around!
