I'm usually a lurker, but if I can help anyone avoid this situation...I want to do my part.
Background- I got a really nasty cough (something my other rug rats picked up at daycare). I never felt "sick" per se...just a productive cough. Everything I coughed up was clear, never ran a fever, and overall felt like I was getting better. However, the cough did linger for about 3 weeks.
Wednesday morning I wake u with stabbing chest pain on my left side. I could barely turn my steering wheel and coughing brought me to tears at work. I made a Dr. Apt for that afternoon and when I got there, my bp was 160/90 and hr 140 from the pain. They diagnosed me with a rib fracture and prescribed 3 class C drugs as well as an antibiotic for the bronchitis. The pain is like nothing I've ever felt before..and intensified by my growing uterus putting stress on my rib cage.
Apparently when women are in the 3rd tri, the uterus stresses the rib cage somewhat so having a bad cough can cause a stress fracture of a rib. Being pregnant really complicates a rib fracture since we can't take ibuprofen etc. There is very high risk for getting pneumonia since it's difficult to take deep breaths/cough and I already had bronchitis. They say it takes 6 weeks to heal...and I'm due in 9. I'm terrified of having to push this baby out with a broken rib.
Moral of the story... If you have a cough in the third trimester..don't try to tough it out. I thought I was doing good by just coughing it out and avoiding antibiotics...and now I'm in a world of hurt. I wouldn't wish this on anyone....
Hoping for a quick recovery and smooth delivery. Thanks for listening.
Re: Broken rib from coughing..learn from me
@MBMO2 go to the dr if your cough doesn't get better soon!
