Since I don't do Pinterest

Anyone here want to play home decorator / interior designer with me?

The entrance to our new home is a bit small. Well, not really, but it is when you try to cram in 5 people at the same time. Now add to that winter coats and boots and well, you get the idea. I need to organize it so getting out the door doesn't become some sort of Hunger Games.

So.

Here's our entrance. To give you an idea of size, each tile is 12" x 12".

The first picture shows our current storage arrangement: a small closet and a coat tree.

What I would like to do is utilize the opposite wall so that everyone would get their own designated space - or at least organize it so that everyone can quickly access all of their things without stepping on everyone else's toes.

My basic idea is something like this (this is similar to the setup they have at the girls' DC)

(Note that you can't see them, but there are 2 hooks underneath each shelf)

I like the concept, I would just like to give it more of a "home" vibe.

Also, I would like to avoid going further than the bathroom door. As in, I don't want to come out the bathroom to find myself face to face with a bunch of coats and stuff.

Suggestions anyone?

PS: The cat box can definitely go someplace else.

  • I would certainly suggest hooks at kid level so that the girls could be semi responsible for their own coatsand backpacks. Either a boot tray below for their own shoes with a small box for their gloves and hats or a bench with cubbies underneath for each child.

I've also seen where there are chalkboards or cork boards over the hooks for notes, papers, art, etc. for each kid.

You've got a great space/spot to do something functional!

  • Thanks for the ideas, @CrashIntoMe1

And to answer your question, we do have a garage entry to the house. However, it's a single-car garage and the way our driveway is setup, you can't drive out of the garage if there's even one car in the driveway. That means I will park in the garage and DH will park outside, since he leaves first in the morning. And since he's the one to take the kids to DC, they will for sure be leaving through the front door. So even if I do the pick up and we come in from the garage, we would all still put our things away by the front door. I will have a shoe rack and a few hooks by the garage door just in case, though.

I don't know about removing the doors to the closet. We still have clothes that will need to go in there (our ski jackets, for instance, plus the kids' spares).

I really like the bench with the blue cushion. I would probably ditch the bottom drawers to make room for boots/shoes, but it's definitely something I like.

  • I wish I had the space to do stuff like this. Just came in here to be jealous:/
  • I want so bad to do something like this in our garage entry, but the hallway is too small. Make sure to show us pics of what you decide to do.
  • I really like the idea of hooks for coats, with a bench beneath that lifts for storage for things like boots/shoes etc.  I wish we had room for something like that near our front door, so the shoes aren't always all over the floor right there.  Maybe cubbies above the hooks for hats, mittens, scarves?
