What it felt like to carry twins.

I'm new here and we just found out we are expecting. I feel totally weird them when I was pregnant with my DD. I'm only 5-6weeks but I feel fuller and my symptoms are stronger and earlier than they were with DD. I wont have an ultra sound for a few weeks still but I was just curious if what I was feeling could be twins. Thanks ladies!

Re: What it felt like to carry twins.

  • Seriously doubt it. Every pregnancy I different and symptoms and showing always come earlier after the first time.

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!

  • The things you mentioned are more common with second pregnancies and generally not noticed (at least not until a little later) with twin pregnancies. Regardless, good luck with yours!

  • It felt the same as carrying both of my singletons, up until I was about 30w along.

  • Ok so I really have no need to worry quiet yet. We have twins on both of our families so we have a good chance of it happening. I just wasnt sure if what I was experiencing was similar to those who have carried twins.
  • Everyone responds to pregnancy differently, but most of us who have both multiples and singletons probably didn't see too much of a difference between the pregnancies till later in 2nd tri when the little ones really hit the growth spurts. As PPs have said, it's very likely the more acute symptoms are just due to this pregnancy being your second. Either way congrats!

  • My symptoms were pretty much the same with my twin pregnancy vs my singleton pregnancy. I did feel tired a lot sooner, but I also had another child to tend to this ime around which likely contributed.

    Congratulations and good luck.

  • Twins came my 3rd pregnancy. All 3 very different. First, easy. Second, not so easy. Third, hard. Idk if it's twin specific vs having other responsibilities like young children to manage that made it worse for me...but my second singleton pregnancy was no walk in the park.

This exactly....but I was less tired in the first tri with twins as well as less bloating! And twins running in the family doesn't necessarily mean anything, I was told they have to be on your maternal side and be fraternal twins to be "genetic". Someone correct me if I am wrong about that!

  • This twin pregnancy is my 3rd pregnancy. My symptoms with this pregnancy aren't as bad when I was pregnant with my second (which was a boy). So just because you're carrying twins doesn't mean that your symptoms are "double". Every pregnancy is so different! Congrats on your pregnancy!!

  • This is our only pregnancy and it seems like my symptoms haven't been as bad as some of my singleton counterparts. I think it just varies person to person.

  • My MFM said double the hormones double everything- I had morning sickness early on and it lasted way past a singleton.
  • I had severe morning sickness with my first, it lasted a full six months and I vomited at least once a day, sometimes two or three times a day - she was a singleton. I had a little worse than average morning sickness with my second, threw up every day for a couple months, then once every day or two for another couple months - she was also a singleton. I threw up a total of 8 times my entire third pregnancy, they were twin boys.

You really only have a slightly higher chance of twins than the general population, and that "higher chance" would only come from your family.  Your DH's family history cannot affect you.

To answer your original question....nothing you have described sounds like twins.  There are no "twin symptoms" so there's no way for you to feel like it is.  Every pg is different.

This is exactly right. It's a common misconception that when a man has twins in his family that it means he genetically passes them down. This is just not true. What the male passes genetically is the gender. The amount of babies comes from mommy only.

Also fraternal twins and the concept of hyper ovulation is what is passed down genetically. I was predisposed to hyper ovulation and yet I'm having identical twins which is totally random. Which means in my next pregnancy I could hyper ovulate and have twins again!! Yikes!!
  • Im having twins im 11 wk n 4 days now and i felt the same constanly full couldnt eat snd slept most of the day away i have no history of twins in my family at sll . Good luck xx
  • I had my DS 19 years ago. I had a lot of nausea but not much actual vomiting. I had a miscarriage in December and got pregnant with twins in February. Before I even took my test, my morning coffee tasted different and yucky. I was 6 weeks when I went to the doc for an ultrasound and she confirmed twins. I had told her before the US that my symptoms seemed a lot stronger than they should be at that point. I didn't suspect twins or rather I was hoping I wasn't having twins. This is the 4th set in my family.
  • Thank you everyone! I had a singleton that was a 30 weeker so I'm hoping not for twins because I got no explanation as to why she came early and I can imagine going through it with twins! I know I will if I have to of course but am not wishing it :)
  • Cassie,

For me, mine was extreme hunger. Amplified symptoms. I started getting up at midnight to devour my refrigerator-at 4 weeks, I took down a box of Life cereal, a half a gallon of milk, a sandwich and a  salad and was still starving. I never had that with my singleton until I was six months a long. Symptoms that I have now that I did not ever have with my singleton are vivid dreams, and frequent urination (you have this with a singleton, but for me, it is like every ten minutes.) Six weeks, I am eating every twenty minutes and growing like a weed....twins don't run in my family either and I did not do IVF. I am now confirmed 12 weeks, two peas in a pod and I am a walking cow obsessed with food. Also, my breasts grew two sized already-my singleton that did not happen until I was 9 month pregnant. My symptoms however, do not prove that you will have twins or even a way to confirm that possibility, but they are what confirmed it for me first. Everyone is different....either way, one or two or three or more....we are all blessed to have life in our belly!
