The Differences in Pediatricians

We had our 15 month appointment today and they were not worried that Charlie has nothing more than "that," "this" and has mama and papa sometimes. Because she's babbling and meeting other milestones he said not to worry. It's so different from what some of you other ladies have said your pedi said that I'm kind of dumbfounded. I'm glad he said not to worry on one hand but surprised at the same time. Just crazy.

  • See, it's fascinating to me how they can be so different since they all have access to the same research and such. @kitchencolors No 15 month exam? What about her 15 month vaccines? I'm just happy our ped didn't think she needed to have 5 words, I was really worried about that.

  • I really don't know where they get these rules.  Some docs seem to think it's no big deal if they aren't talking yet and some set a clear goal that the kid should meet.

DD doesn't say clear words yet but communicates with us in her own way and is healthy and active, so I'm not worried.  I have heard lots of other moms say that their kids didn't start talking much 'till they were closer to their second birthday.

  • We also don't do a 15 month exam...next vaccinations for us, as well as my friends with different doctors, are set at 18-24 months, although we're in Canada so not sure if that's why....?

We had our appointment last week. Pedi said he should be saying at least 6-8 words by now. He says about 3 and that's be generous. So pedi gave us the number to early intervention. I'm gonna wait on that a bit. Pedi said LO could just be a "late bloomer" when it comes to talking, idk? I'm not too concerned at this point.

Pedi did say that most of the kids they see are behind on language. I thought to myself...if most children are "behind" at this age, maybe they need to change the standards, kwim?

    Seriously.

That's interesting. G was referred to EI at his 12 month appt because he wasn't saying anything at all (and still isn't). A lot of people that I talked to (on here and irl) thought it was too early to be concerned, but I'm ultimately very glad I followed up on the referral. It is really interesting to me to hear about the differences, though. In a strange way it makes me feel a little better that others wouldn't be concerned, even if my pedi and I are.
