IUGR question

We had another growth scan yesterday with the MFM I thought we got the all clear from IUGR but that isn't the case. Baby A is at 45% for growth and Baby B is at less than 5%. To me this seems like a huge gap between them and that gap each week gets a little larger. They don't seem worried at all. So my question is for those of you who have had IUGR what was the gap between yours before they did anything about it? Aside from size everything else looks good. We do have to go back on Tuesday because they couldn't get a good picture of the cord flow on B so they are going to recheck. Should I be more pushy as far as answers? Is that a major difference between the two? I feel so lost and they are so vague in their responses.

Re: IUGR question

  • I don't have any advice here, but sending T&Ps that everything is OK w/ your LOs!

  • That does seem like a big difference. For me, baby A is at 4% and B is at 22%. Both of mine are having cord flow issues and I have preeclampsia, so I am on hospital bed rest. It's good that they are having you come back to get a better picture of the cord flow. I hope everything looks good on Tuesday!

  • I am being watched for IUGR. My MFM said if the growth discordance is 20% or more then they become worried.
  • Mine were mo/di and they were worried when there was a 20% difference and baby A was measuring around 10th%. I was in the hospital for monitoring at 24w becaue baby A had reversed cord flow. I don't mean to scare you but my mfms were pretty serious about IUGR. They told me if he reached 5th percentile and under they would deliver due to the increased risk of fetal demise associated with severe IUGR. Obviously this depends on what gestation you are at and the medical team determining if baby is safer in than out. How often are you getting growth scans? BPPs? NSTs? Are you at home or inpatient? Glad everything else looks good. I'd say if you feel uncomfortable with your current Dr., get a second opinion.
  • Thanks everyone. I am trying to find a doctor I can get a second opinion from however I am literally out in the middle of no where so the closest MFM is 2 1/2 hours away and he is the one I see. The next closest is almost 4 hours so it is a challenge. I am getting growth scans every other week with my OB and once a month with the MFM and cervical length u/s once to twice a week depending on how it measures. I just started getting weekly NSTs this week. It really has me on edge especially because we found out it in fact is not two separate placentas that fused but one placenta making them mono/di unlike di/di which my OB had told me initially. That also was a huge shock finding that out so late in the pregnancy. I just have a very uneasy feeling about baby B and they will not take me seriously. On paper he looks ok just way behind in size but I can tell his movements are much weaker just that "mommy intuition" I guess. I am no longer on HBR as my cervix stayed stable and they said not to worry about the growth at the time (27 weeks) so I am at home on SBR. It just seems like they are letting B fall so far behind and have no plan of action or are even really acknowledging the fact. The OB literally just brushed it off as "oh sometimes it just happens" and left it at that. Im upset to say the least. Last thing I want is to have a small heathy baby to suddenly have major complications because they dont seem to care.

  • Yikes. Yes please seek another opinion asap. If they are mono/di, that is even more worrying. I'm obviously not a Dr. But the fact he's severe iugr and has such a large discordance is obviously signaling there is a serious issue going on. Trust your mama instincts. I had to drive 2 hours each way for my mfm too. Thinking of you!
