OT Bathroom Reno

I need some opinions! We are slowly renovating our upstairs guest bath. We have painted the vanity white and replaced the cabinet hardware with pulls in oil rubbed bronze. The towel rods are also ORB. Last week, we had a granite counter installed (in Santa Cecilia, I think?) and used brushed nickel faucets b/c we needed 2 and they were $30 cheaper EACH than even the cheapest ORB I could find. Now we need to replace the light fixture. I can't decide whether to keep all the ORB hardware and use ORB lights, ignoring the brushed nickel faucets all together -OR- get brushed nickel lights and eventually replace all the other ORB. We have a downstairs bath where we could recycle the towel bars, but we'd be wasting a bunch of pulls. Ack. My head hurts! Would it help if I try to post a picture??

ETA We're trying to update it so it will have appeal when we try to sell in a few years.

Re: OT Bathroom Reno

  • I'd go with orb and ignore the faucets. I feel like faucets are generically silver most if the time, so nbd.

  • I agree with TJ.  Faucet color seems standard whereas the pulls and light would be noticed.

also, add a heated tile floor and pulsing shower head.  I know somebody who would buy up that bathroom in a second! (I'm looking at you, MK! ;) )

  • I think it's fine if you ignore the faucet and match the light to the pulls.  But...how much were the ORB pulls?  If they're not that expensive to replace and it's going to drive you nuts that it doesn't all match, then I would slowly switch everything to brushed nickle.
  • @stoneycakes - Replacing the pulls will run me $25 to $40. It's the towel bars that get expensive. Plus I forgot we'll need to match the shower faucets to the sink faucets.

So we're good with mix-and-match? It doesn't bother me in the kitchen, but my style guru friend said I should go with all the same metals in the bathroom.

@Mandmeesh - We're going to try to put a heated floor in the master bathroom when we update it. I would also love to get a towel warmer, but I think we'll save that for our "forever" house.

@unaveragejane, yeah I would just make all the faucets match each other and have everything else ORB.  I don't think it's a big deal. Actually, now that you mention it, that is how my upstairs bathroom is, LOL!  It was like that when we moved in and it never bothered me.

ETA: Actually I just checked.  The light fixture and towel bars are ORB, the faucets are silver and the pulls are black.  That shit's eclectic and I never noticed!
  • Whew, that makes me feel a lot better, @stoneycakes! Thank you!!

  • I'm not a huge fan of heated floors (we have them in the main bath). But I love my tile. I'd stick with standard stainless for faucets and shower. Make sure they're good quality. Match all accessories (handles, light fixture, towel, and toilet paper holder.

  • For selling sake I would spend the extra money and have everything match. But....I'm super matchy matchy. We are renovating our kitchen right now and the button for the disposal is shiny silver and the faucet is brushed. I am going today to exchange it for a brushed button.

  • Not to hijack, but how did you paint the vanity white? I painted our bathroom orange and I want the cabinets white but I'm afraid to do it wrong. Like the tv stand that I painted with latex and no base and anytime it gets bumped the paint starts peeling off. Oops.

Sand it a little and prime it then paint. If you sand it it has something to grab on to. Otherwise it is just lying on top of the other paint.

Yep, what @Bemyselfandi said: sand, prime, and paint. Unfortunately, ours wound up kind of splotchy. It was 1980's golden oak, so it took a lot of layers. I am pretty sure DH was not consistent with always using the same paint, so the paint he used to do the edges dried more yellow than what he used for the faces. It's not super noticeable, but it bugs the heck out of me. So lesson learned: sand and prime the heck out of them, and always use the same paint!
