Changing table freak out. Help!!

Does anyone else's kid lose their shit anytime they are put on the changing table? Mine flips the fuck out every time and he's pushing me to the edge. I'm trying to keep from getting poop everywhere while he's screaming and doing an alligator death roll. Sometimes my phone, ipad, or a toy distracts him. Usually not. How do I deal with this? I'm losing my mind!!

  • I had a friend who was a pro at changing her son while he was standing up...poop and all.  I was never able to master it but DS1 was always content to be changed wherever.  DS2 is fine on the changing table but we will occasionally change him on the floor or on a bed.  What if you keep a special toy that he only sees while being changed near the changing table?  DS2 has this puppy that plays Christmas music and wags it's tail that my grandma gave him last Christmas...he thinks it is hilarious and plays with it while I change his diaper most of the time.

  • I stopped using the changing table around 9 months for this reason. The floor is MUCH easier to wrangle him on- I would stretch my legs out and he rested his head on my feet. It just got too dangerous and messy on the table.

This. My son passed the weight limit for our changing table a long time ago anyway.

  • Hi ladies, I'm a newbie sorta. Been on TB for a while but I'm just getting on the forums.
I have a 20mo and yes he hates diaper changes but hates being in a dirty diaper too lol. Sometimes distractions work like feet smelling or blowing on his tummy but sometimes nothing works and thats when I use slip-on diapers cuz I can put them on while he's standing.

  • Well, sounds like I'm not alone here! I guess it's just grit your teeth and hope for the best. Ugh!

  • Yes, my DS loathes the changing table...I mean, he hates diaper changes in general but he's always way more pissed when I put him on the table LOL. Thing is, I hate changing him in other areas around the house, because on those occasions when poop does get everywhere, I would rather the messiness and germs be confined to the table/changing pad "hazard area." Haha. The only time I let him get changed NOT on the table is when my patience is already worn thin and I don't have the energy for the all out wrestling match. Also, with being pregnant, I don't get the karate kicks to the stomach when using the table, so it helps keep me protected.

  • I hardly use public changing tables because I find them very dirty and I'm always worried he will touch something. This is my third baby so I am very good at lap changes or I recline my stroller put his pad and can change him right there.

  • Yes, DS usually is an animal on the changing table, but it's actually easier to change him there than on the floor where he can get away. He finally has a tiny bit of fear of falling so that helps rein him in a little bit. I can usually distract him enough with a toy that we keep in his room (so not one he plays with all the time). That buys me about 10 seconds. I've learned to change him FAST.

  • OMG yes! I give him a book. This keeps him distracted just long enough to get the diaper changed. By the time I'm pulling up his pants, he's throwing the book on the floor.
