Pregnant with Identical Twins at 8 Weeks!

My husband and I found out teo weeks ago we are pregnant with twins! No history in family except for very distant great uncles. (Floyd & Lloyd. Lol) we went yesterday for our 8 week 4 day ultrasound and it was confirmed they are identical-monochorionic/diamniotic. But baby a has a heartbeat of 171 and baby b is only 144. Baby b is still measuring smaller too. Really nervous about vanishing twin syndrom. On top of that, Ive had terrible hip pain since week 5 and morning sickness for a week. Also experiencing lightheadedness, trembling and night sweats. Anyone have any advice? Its been a rough Trimester. Cant wait for the next 4 weeks to be over!!

Re: Pregnant with Identical Twins at 8 Weeks!

  • Congrats on the twins, that's exciting! I wouldn't be too worried about their HR those seem good to me. :) We had our u/s on Tues at 6w6d and the HR were 115 and 126 and we were told those were great. How much smaller is baby b? A day, two days, a week? It's not uncommon for them to be a couple days off by measurements. As far as the lightheadedness and trembling goes you may want to eat a few small meals a day or have some juice or graham crackers on hand. It could be that your blood sugar is low. I'm not a doc but these are some answers just from personal experience. I hope you can relax and take it easy and try to enjoy the miracle. :)

  • Thank you so much! Baby b was measuring a few days smaller last week and this week it was hard to get a good measurement because of thr position he was in. He looks the same size on the ultrasound though! I am very small and have always had a high metabolism so I think it might be my blood sugar. Im trying to eat small meals but the nausea and food adversions are so bad right now. My doctor suggested nutritious shakes. So im going to try that to get more calories. Its still hard not to worry about baby b though. Trying to be positive but I have been a crying mess. Those dang hormones.
  • Congratulations! My identical girls just turned 2 months old! I was very sick during first trimester. My baby B measured a week behind baby A the entire pregnancy. Sometimes more. Good luck!

My fraternal twin boys. Born Sept 2013.
  • Congratulations and welcome! I also had mono/dis and my Baby B was always behind Baby A but it never progressed into anything more serious....I just needed a lot of monitoring. I know it's hard (impossible) to not worry, but try to just take one day at a time and stay positive. It can be so hard, and honestly, the anxiety factor was the hardest part of my pregnancy, but consider it part of taking care of yourself. And ditto PPs on the blood sugar; try to make sure you get plenty of protein in whatever form you can tolerate (I think I lived on cottage cheese my first trimester). GL and wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy!

  • Congrats and I also had identical twins girls (mono/mono) had them at 32weeks so they wouldn't have cord entanglement. You should be fine and don't worry less worry is the better.I was somewhat worried but I was thinking positive that everything would be fine. I did go on hospital bed rest for 2 months for irritable uterus a nd cord entanglement but I still thought positive.good luck

  • Congratulations and welcome! :)

For the nausea, if it gets worse, ask for Zofran.  It's safe during pregnancy and for me worked wonders.  I was able to function again after sending all day in bed for 2 weeks :p   I have found this pregnancy to be soo much more painful than my two singleton girls ><  BUT!  We're growing twice as fast, so yeah... there is going to be pain and discomfort.  It'll get better and all be worth it :D

  • Those heart rates are great! I wouldn't worry too much. Family history doesn't have anything to do with identicals! I had severe hyperemesis for 6 months. I hope your sickness ends sooner!

Welcome and Congrats!! If my twin pregnancy (and other twin moms i've spoken to) is any indication, it'll be more like 12 more weeks ;) Eat what you can, do what you can. I almost fainted at 12 weeks because of low blood sugar. I didn't know at the time I had two little energy suckers in there! :)

  • Thank you all for your support! It makes me feel better knowing I am not alone. Its hard when everyone around me only had one baby and cant relate. I know they mean well but at times they cant understand exactly what Im going through. Its nice to have an outlet and support in you ladies! Xoxo
  • Congrats and welcome! Our little girls heart rates were different too. Like the others have said its nearly impossible but minimize you worry and think positive - you're having twins! Yay!
  • Congrats and welcome! I started having hip and pelvis pain early and broke out my support belt from my last pregnancy by 6 weeks so I could function at work.
