Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Soy Formula

My son has been a huge spitter upper since birth.  I BF for 6 months and since then have been trying to find the right formula for him.  I just recently tried Soy formula and he spit up 6 times in the same time period that he would spit up 30x on regular formula.

Have any of you given your LO's soy formula?  My pedi said it was ok, but I am curious if anyone else's pedi said different or if you had any negative experiences with it?

Re: Soy Formula

  • We are on nutramigen for months due to lactose intolerance.  We switched to soy about a month ago.  Our pedi was good with it and LO didn't seem to notice the change. We are happy thus far.

  • I EBF and when I tried formula before going back to work, DS threw up every time. The Pedi said it was probably a milk protein sensitivity and that the hypoallergenic formula would be our best bet.  I asked about soy and she said that recent studies aren't showing great things regarding soy formulas, but she didn't say any specifics.  I tried the nutramegin for a weekend, and aside from the expense, the smell and taste seemed so bad, I couldn't make DS drink it for the next six months, so  I am still pumping :(.
  • The soy smells terrible too...like bacon?  Go figure.

DS has been on it for like 3 days and his spit ups are still about a third or less of what they were.  I am a little torn but he seems happy, and he is getting a lot of food now too, so I am going to go with it.  I will talk to the pedi again at his 9 month check up.
  • My son has a milk protein intolerance and has been on soy since he was about 3 months old.  I've also heard about the estrogen in the formula, but when using regular formula he had very bloody stools.  I'm just feeding him a lot of solid foods and trying to introduce foods that will subsitite the nutrients he's getting in the formula, so that he eats less of it, and hopefully we can wean him early.

  • That is kind of what my plan is too @erinmc1.  I asked his pedi what is the minimum amount of formula that I can feed him and she said 24 oz along with 3 meals of babyfood a day.
  • I used soy formula with ds1 17 years ago and have no issues related to it (known anyway)....that being said, ds2 reacted to regular milk based formula so I switched him to soy for supplementing breastfeeding.  Lately it felt like he was reacting to the soy so when he was diagnosed as FTT a few weeks ago and the Pedi instructed me to add 4-8 oz of formula per day we tried him on Nutramigen -- after 2-3 days on it, within 3 hours of eating it, he was screaming and arching his back so now we're using Neocate.  Fortunately, I was able to bring my milk production back up and hopefully I won't need to supplement with formula for much longer.

I didn't notice any bad smell to the Nutramigen but I did notice while making ds2's last bottle of Neocate that I smelled something that reminded me of microwave popcorn, which we don't have in the house.

We are at day 2 of trying Neocate so we'll see how well ds2 tolerates it.

The milk is better than the soy for your child so I would try several different kinds first... (Gentle, sensitive (although this has its own issues), etc.). However, if your LO is not tolerating milk based formulas, soy may be the better choice for you. More often than not, it is going to be perfectly fine for your child. I was raised on soy formula and have no issues. And I agree with pp... Soy formula smells awful :)
