Hairs question

Ok.

So I mentioned in the UO thread that I have frizz problems.  My hair isn't super curly (mostly wavy with a few tight curls.  My hair is weird.) and normal frizz controller stuff weighs my hair down and makes it look greasy, even if I don't use much.

I don't blow dry my hair very often.  I usually just wash (with combo shampoo and conditioner) and go and let it air dry.

Any recommendations on what products I can use that will help with the frizz and that doesn't require me blow drying my hair?

Re: Hairs question

  • Mine is similar (better here in the dry air though) and I use this stuff: https://www.aveda.com/product/5250/16973/Collections/Smooth-InfusionTM/Smooth-Infusion-Style-Prep-Smoother/index.tmpl
It's expensive but you use so little it lasts a really long time.

  • Cinema I saw your comment in UO about Suave products. I was using Suave too and had lots of frizz issues even with long straight hair. I used Herbal Essences body envy on vacation and my hair was so soft! (la di da, I know I'm really moving up here). But I don't want to /can't spend big money on the salon brands.

  • I love Moroccan oil. It makes my hair really smooth and shiny. I just put a little (like 1 pump) in my hair after my shower and let it dry.
  • My hairdresser said that Suave is basically dish soap.

IKR? I used the rosemary mint. But my hair was so dry. Don't we look smart.

Who is making these microfiber towels that don't absorb water? My Mom just got some for her kitchen. Towels have one job: to absorb.

  • That's exactly how I towel dry my hair.  I just leave the towel on my head while I do everything else and get dressed.

I'll have to look into the fancier shampoos/conditioners.

When you use the coconut oil in your hair, do you put something around your hair so it doesn't get your pillow all oily?  Or do you not use that much.

I use the kids' line on DD2 and it works so, so well. It makes her curls soft and tames the frizz. I buy it at Target. I also know other people (adults) who swear by it.

  • My first advice is to stop using a 2 in 1. Frizz and static are signs of lack of moisture in the hair which can stem from not using proper product (hence the stop using a 2 in 1). Satin pillow cases will help with dryness as well. Don't use a brush when you have wet hair, use a wide tooth comb. Instead of putting product on wet hair, use it on your hair when it's dry. Anti frizz serums are great but less is more. Have you tried a sea salt spray? You can do it on dry hair, it will help bring out your wave and calm the frizz. Pinterest has some great recipes to make one a home and it's stuff most people already have (I use 1 tablespoon coconut oil, 2 tablespoons hard sea salt, a shot of vodka-I'm serious, a tablespoon of gel and a cup of warm water and shake to blend it all together)

@cinemagoddess i put a towel over my pillow because the oil will stain. Make sure you wash it out really well or your hair will be super grease ball.

  • these are all awesome tips!  i have really frizzy, wavy to curly hair.  i have a ridiculous amount of hair, but it is all really fine.  i am extremely cheap, and pretty lazy so i don't want to spend a butt ton of $ on product that i won't use/won't work.  i'll have been meaning to buy some coconut oil though.

  • What do you do when your kid won't keep his damned hand out of your hair? I can HEAR it crunching and snapping as he twines his fingers through and knots it up.

Also, I really need a giant haircut to get rid of ALL the splits, and I can't bring myself to do it. I don't want shoulder length hair. I want longer hair. But it's just shit at the ends.

I feel you on the frizzy wavy-with-a-few-curls hair. I hate it.
  • Is it liquid?

    The grocery store.
Which section?  I've looked at a few but I can't find anything that's specifically called coconut oil.

  • It's solid when colder, and turns liquid at something like 78*. It will liquefy just from your hands touching it.
  • Where do you get coconut oil?

I buy it from Trader Joes normally. Make sure you get the virgin, unrefined. The only ingredient in it should be coconut oil

Also, coconut oil is great for whitening your teeth, if anyone cares. You swish it in your mouth a couple times a week for 5 minutes at a time and it really helps a lot.
  • Would they sell it at an Ulta?  I'm going to be by an Ulta tonight.

Doubt it. It's not meant to be used as a hair product.. It just so happens to be great for it

  • Where did you get it @mrsell?

  • I should add that I've been using the Dove hair shampoo & condit and I'm really happy with it.
I use coconut oil sometimes too - I sleep with a towel on my pillow. I just use the stuff I got at Safeway. It's in the natural foods section at our store. You can order it on amazon too.

  • Don't use a 2 in 1. Use a sulfate free shampoo. I use Redken curvaceous products. Ringlet is nice but be careful not to use too much or it will weigh down your hair.

  • I didn't get any of the fancy stuff last night, but I did find some Herbal Essence Shampoo and (separate) Conditioner (both smoothing formula) in our bathroom last night, so I tried that today.

So far, my hairs are softer, but they're still frizzy as hell.

  • I wish @sissyishere could figure out the interwebz, because she would have great advice, too.  She is a stylist, and loves working with curly and frizzier hair.

I have very course, thick hair myself.  I use salon grade shampoo/conditioner, because it makes a difference with my hair.   I also do not wash it daily, and only use a comb post shower and not a brush when ridding rat's nests.  I rarely blow-dry my hair, and when I do, it's mostly air dried at that point.

Coconut oil is great, too, but I also use a mist of aragon oil in the winter when my hair is really dry.

  • We use Redken products on my dd's hair and it worked wonders overnight. I got them at Ulta for a decent price and it's worth it.
