2nd Trimester

Twins?!

I had my 13 week checkup yesterday. When she checked my uterus, she found it just below my belly button. She gave me this sort of weird smile and asked if I was sure of my LMP. When I told her I was, she asked how common twins were in my family. I know of at least five instances. That's when she told me that I was measuring around 16-18 weeks.

She couldn't confirm a twin pregnancy by heartbeat because it was so hard to find on at all. She thinks I have an anterior placenta which is blocking the sound. So she scheduled me for an ultrasound on Nov 1. In the meantime, I'm so nervous! Has anyone else ever experienced something like this? If so, what was the outcome?

Have you had any ultrasounds at all?  I'm assuming you haven't.

Do you know for sure when you ovulated?  Not your LMP, but your ovulation date.  That could help with knowing how far along precisely you are.

My uterus measured big for the entire pregnancy with my 2nd son.  He was a singleton.  There's no way to be sure until you have an ultrasound.

  • No ultrasounds yet. I'm also sure of my ovulation date.
  • I would be concerned about a doctor/nurse whoever suggesting you could be pregnant with twins based on family history. Having twins is not hereditary.

  • I'm pregnant with my 2nd set of twins, my first set both placentas were anterior and my OB never had an issue finding hbs. I was measuring 4-6 wks ahead my entire pregnancy but I had an u/s at 5w that confirmed twins so I knew from the beginning.

    You were charting?

Yes we had been TTC for almost a year. I used OPKs and BBT to determine ovulation. I could also tell by a pain that occurred at the same time every month in my left side (I only have one ovary).
  • I wouldn't believe her until you get an ultrasound. I'm 17.5 weeks and only having 1 baby. My uterus is measuring 20 weeks.

  • A difference of 3-4 weeks wouldn't concern me.  When I went to my 13 week appointment with my 3rd my fundus was measuring 27 weeks, it was WAY over my belly button.  They sent me off for an ultrasound but it was only 1 baby and a uterus that was just huge.
  • So far it seems like it could go either way. Thanks everyone for your input!
  • Fraternal twins are hereditary. Identical twins are not.
Only if they are on your mother's side and are a result of having a condition (for lack of better word) that causes release of multiple eggs.

  • I would be more concer with the fact that they could not find a HB and are making you wait 2 weeks for a U/S.

They did find the heartbeat and it sounded healthy. It was just harder to keep track of cause the baby kept moving, possibly behind the placenta.

  • Maybe an elective place if you were really curious and don't want to wait 2 weeks.

This. And if you only have one ovary, it's highly unlikely that you released two eggs.
Don't get your hopes up. Some people just measure big and I can't believe your doctor even mentioned the possibility of twins to you.

  • Your doctor doesn't know what she is talking about. By 16 weeks there is no doubt they can find an heartbeat. Two they would never say twins without doing and u/s. I guess I shouldn't save never since your's did. I would wait for a sonogram before I trust anything she said. Two if you were 16 weeks - they should of wanted to do a dating sonogram by then. After 12 weeks it won't exactly be accurate.

  • Are you talking your fundal height was measuring big? Because I was just sent I for an ultrasound earlier this week because fundal height was measuring 8 weeks ahead... Which is just insane. Turns out there is one baby for sure (fraternal twins also run on my mothers side btw) and the off measurement was caused by a little extra fluid and baby's positioning. Good luck!

  • I've measured big with both pregnancies. I'm super short waisted and was huge and carried all I'm my belly. Ran bigger but had a normal sized baby and just one. My baby itself did not run big just my fundal height as well.

  • Yep, my fundal height. I can't wait for the ultrasound. I have a feeling there's only one but it would pretty cool if there were two!
  • So I went to by doctor when I was *8 weeks* (that's what I thought I was). It was just a regular checkup/pap, etc. when she did the exam she said I felt further than 8 weeks, but she didn't say how many weeks & that she would have me back in two weeks to meet with the other doctor in the practice for a sonogram.

I went back for the sonogram & find out its twins
  • I was also measuring 14 weeks, not 10 as I had thought.
