Success after IF

Sleeping issues/crawling

So we sleep trained Hannah and things were going wonderfully.

Then she had some teething going on, but those teeth have popped now. She was developing a cold, but it's getting better.

BUT when we do her routine and put her into bed she starts crying and then she starts crawling around. And then she LOSES it. She won't/can't lie back down on her own. Like it's all out what I call "bloody murder" cry. She did it one night for over an hour. I picked her up, fed her and she fell asleep in like minutes. SO what do I do? I'm afraid that we are allowing her to revert to her old habits, but she was sick and needed to eat more/was being so cuddly. Argh, do I spend one hell of an evening putting her back down every time she gets up to crawl till she learns to fall asleep again? Or do you think it was related to the teething/being sick.

AND on top of it all, we're going on a week long vacation soon and I know things will get all screwed up during the vacation. Anybody else go through this? Did it get better?

  • DD went through a sleep regression every time she was cutting a tooth or learning something new. I uusually just wait it out for a few days until the tooth cuts or the new-ness of the skill wears off. If she doesn't get back to normal within a couple of days and there doesn't seem to be anything else going on, then I redo sleep training (which thank goodness usually only takes one or two nights to get back on track again). Ditto for when we return home from travel. I give her a couple of nights to readjust and then re-train if necessary.

  • We never sleep trained, so I don't have any advice there. But, one of my boys REALLY struggles with milestones. Crawling and pulling up (he couldn't get back down) were especially miserable. He usually works it out on his own after he gets enough practice to be good at the new skill.

It's a rough week or two until it resolves!! Many sleepy baby vibes being sent your way!

  • My guy starting crawling a week ago and his sleep fell apart for a few days. Stick to your sleep training regime. She will figure out how to self soothe again. But usually there is a sleep regression with any new skill. If you stick to your training routine any time there is a disruption I think it works best. GL
  • E did this too. I remember it being somewhat hilarious that she was just crawling around her crib crying, but it was really rough on me bc it disrupted my sleep too. I would spend a couple of terrible nights going in, laying her back down, then maybe patting her chest or her butt till she's falling asleep. And like ELF said, Ferber recommends retraining after an event like this or a vacation if things get messed up, but don't feel guilty for babying your baby when she needs it. You're not going to ruin her forever. Retraining is much easier than the initial training. It's more like a refresher course. Enjoy your vacation!

  • M does this too with milestones, but nothing like crawling/crying for an hour!  Poor you and poor Hannah.  Like PPs said, usually the novelty wears off after a few days and they'll go back to their normal sleep routine.

With M, it never worked with laying him back down.  He thought it was fun and would get up again.  He didn't cry though.
