How to help a mom on WIC

I have a friend who has 2 kids, and she and her husband both work, but they don't have very high-paying jobs, and they're on WIC. She is the sweetest person ever, and even though they're financially in a tough spot, she has babysat DS but refused to take money for it, given us some of their extra groceries, etc. I asked how I could repay her, but she said she's happy to provide the favor, and she honestly is that nice of a person.

Anyway, I do want to repay the favor, but I don't want to do it in a way that's insulting. What do you recommend? Would it be tacky if I took them a box of diapers, bag of groceries, or a Publix or BRU gift card? I'll offer to babysit. Maybe give them hand me down clothes? It's tough because they do work hard, and I don't want to insult their dignity, but I want to really help them and say thanks! Please give me ideas!

  • That's so tricky. If you do a gift card, I'd do it anonymously.

If you 'stumble' on extra (open) diapers left over from your kids, that's sweet.

I'd tread lightly. She sounds like a lovely person that doesn't feel 'in need' YKWIM?

You're really kind for wanting to help, though. It's a tough call. :)

  • you could always have amazon ship her diapers or target.com, or anything else they may need.

do you live in an area that has groceries delivered?  You could always call and order them delivery and prepay it.

  • i like the suggestion of babysitting her kids, or maybe having a pizza delivered to her house around dinner time one night.

  • I agree with the Christmas idea. Gift cards are always nice for people in need. I'm a single mom of three and my mum slips me gift cards for Tim hortons or for groceries once and a while and it's great because I have them when I'm down to my last $20 to get that lil extra for my kids :)
That's very generous of you to think of her :)

  • That's sweet of you :)  I agree with the "open" diapers and also a Target GC.  Target says "I thought you'd enjoy this" while a grocery GC might say to her "I know you're on WIC and need food" which is more likely to embarrass her.

i agree.  a target or walmart gift card would be perfect, especially if your local target or walmart has a grocery store in it :)
