Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Physical development vs verbal

It's interesting to see the difference between my DD and DS developmentally. DD was in no rush to become mobile. She didn't crawl till about 10 mo and walk till 13. However, she was verbal and could say light and fish around 10-11 mo. DS is way more physically advanced- crawling at 7mo, pulling up and standing pretty well independently at 10 mo. However, he is babbling with no distinguishable words. Our pedi said that he finds boys are doers and girls are talkers. Just curious where everyone else's LOs are developmentally vs verbally and if it differs between boys and girls.

Re: Physical development vs verbal

  • My older two girls were pretty physically advanced. They were walking just before 9 months, pulling up at 6.5 months, crawling at 5.5 months and they were both rather delayed in speech. They both actually are receiving speech services now. My youngest girl was later on the physical milestones. She started crawling around 7.5 months, pulling up around 9 months and wales at 13 months. She is very very verbal for her age. So for me there was definitely a correlation between one bing ahead and one behind butit wasn't a difference of boys and girls.

  • Hmmm, They have been almost spot on with most things. DD rolled earlier and crawled a few weeks earlier, but everything has been within a few weeks of DS. She was crawling about 5.5m, I can't remember for sure, said momma at about 6.5m or so and has added several more words ( whas sat=whats that, byce=bryce, ah duh=all done, dad/daddy, caya=cala(my sister), baw=ball, uh-oh, stah=star, hi/hey, ow sye=outside) they are varied in clarity. What's that is her favorite thing to say as she points at everything! DS said his first word at about 7.5m and it was "pet dog" then he added the basics like momma and dadda, by 1 he had about 10 words. Both were walking by 9 months. I think DS was more confident in his motor skills and mastered them faster though.

  • DD started sitting up at 7 months, army crawling at 8, crawling at 9.5, standing and cruising at 10. She's 11 months now and no words yet, just a ton of babbling. I speak to her in French and DH in English so we expect speech to be delayed.

  • My little guy started sitting up at 5.5 months, crawling at 7, pulling up/cruising at 8.5 and he recently started taking independent steps (11 months).  He also recently started saying some words (like in the past couple of weeks).  He says mama and dada (obviously), duck, dog, baby, bye bye, and thank you.   And I swear the other day he said Mickey Mouse, but it was questionable.  lol.

  • DD is a mover, she only "says" "baa" and it obviously means nothing to her.
  • DS was active earlier. He crawled around 6 months and cruised around the same time, but he didn't walk until around 13 months. I think he was just so fast the other ways. He has always been pretty verbal for a boy. At his 12 month appointment he was clearly saying 3-5 words and spoke in short sentences around 18 months. DD started babbling very young and is still very chatty. But at 11 months the only actual word she says is Dada. She understands things very well. She cruised very early but only started crawling about a month ago. In some ways they are so similar but in others so different. He was much more independent, easy going and fun loving while she is much more cuddly, attached and dramatic. It's amazing how different two siblings can be.

  • I don't know what to think about my lil guy. He has always had very good fine motor skills and focuses on toys and books very closely. He still at almost ten mos does not pull up or crawl. Our pedi advises early intervention, but DH says that's a racket and he's fine. We keep working with him but he just gives up so quickly.
I wouldn't worry too much. I'm curious... what intervention does your pedi suggest?

  • Early Intervention counselors would come to the house and observe LO, then recommend physical therapy type activities to get him going,I guess. We were joking last night that maybe we would all sit around and read threatening letters to him in a hotel conference room! "The following is what will happen if you don't begin crawling: We will no longer hand you your toys when you cry...."

    Bwahaha!

My DD#1 was like this.  She didn't crawl, pull to stand, or cruise until 11.5 months.  She didn't even really roll until 9 months.  But once she started, she went quickly!  She walked at 13 months, then shortly after started running :)  She didn't say a word until 11.5 month either...but by 18 months she wouldn't stop talking!
DS army crawled at 7 months, crawled at 8 months, but didn't walk until 15 months.  He also didn't talk until 15 months.  They are both fine!!!
DD#2 is crawling and cruising (started at 9 months), and she babbles up a storm.  Her only word is "uh oh" as she drops her food, paci, etc.
So funny how they are all different!!!

  • Oh, and we didn't do EI for any of them.  I was worried about DS, but he did everything before 18 months which was when I would have gotten help.  I was never worried about DD...I just enjoyed having only one mobile child for a little longer!  I remember the day she crawled...she went one way, DS went the other and I realized how easy I had had it for 11 months!

DS took his first steps almost 3 weeks ago (9 months old) and is getting better and better at walking across the room! He was slow to roll over and army crawled FOREVER before figuring out how to properly crawl... now he ZOOMS across the room when he crawls! He figured out how to pull up and cruise around 8 months and was standing on his own pretty well just before turning 9 months.

Verbally, he is full of babbles, squeels, and can say 'mama' and 'dada' but I don't think he associates the words to us yet. He can sign for 'milk' and 'more'. Smart little man. :)
  • DS has generally been fairly advanced in his motor skills. He babbles but has no words.

  • My DD (owing to low muscle tone) was super late in gross motor (walked at 20.5 months) and probably a little later than average on verbal too...but man, her fine motor and cognitive were both amazing. She could manipulate with her fingers much better than any of her agemates, and her cognitive measures were always many months ahead.

My DS, on the other hand, seems to be right in the middle of average for everything. Not ahead, not behind, just right on target on all the dimensions. Still just babbling and crawling (commando), but given his trajectory so far, I am expecting a single word and cruising at 12 months. :)

  • DD wasn't pulling up or crawling at 10 months either -- she was rolling though (well). I think she commandoed at 11 months, crawled at maybe 14 months, and pulled up at maybe 15 months. At 18 months, she was still not standing on her own or walking, so we did take her to a PT (not through EI), and they worked with her for about six weeks, after which she suddenly stood up one day and started walking...and is now running, jumping, climbing, and dancing with the best of them!

Don't worry -- I would honestly give it until like 18 months before you call anyone for intervention.
