April 2014 Moms

I wonder if you can eat too much spinach!

Lol. The last few days I've been enjoying a food from my childhood--except in HUGE quantities. Lol. I grew up eating spinach (one of those lil frozen blocks) cooked with butter, salt, black pepper, and sliced up hard-boiled eggs. :) I love it! And I'm super happy that I'm eating something so healthy, but I've just about eaten the whole package if spinach by myself lately. Only once did I share (and still ate most of it). Is there something you can get too much of if you eat that much?! Lol. I'm anemic, so I figure it's a good thing.

  • That's a whole lot of folic acid.  Luckily, whatever your body doesn't need, it will get rid of it.

    Eat away!

  • LOL. I dont think so? When I was actively losing weight, I ate one of those pre-washed ready to eat bags of spinach a day, and I didn't have any issues from it.. besides it being delicious! :D

I actually just heard on my morning radio show that you can overdose on spinach. I can't remember how much you have to eat, it's A LOT. They were doing a segment on surprising things you can OD on. I think it is the Vitamin A or the Iron that you can OD on.

Sorry, I'm no help. I just remember that it is possible. I'll try to find you the link. But it was a very large quantity, so I wouldn't be worried.

ETA: I just found a brief recap of the show. It said you have to eat 5pounds to overdose.

  • The only issue I would say is iron can make you constipated even more so when pregnant so only downside I would say its severe constipation :) sorry! Sounds lush though!!
  • Spinach has a high amount of vitamin K which can effect blood clotting.  I have no idea how much is too much though!

  • I read once that you can run the risk of getting kidney stones if you eat a lot of spinach because it's high in oxalate. You'd probably have to eat tons of it though.

  • I think the only bad effect would be on your poop, so go for it!

  • I've ended up hating Google, because the ultimate result is that you can eat too much of anything, and it will all make your baby sprout extra limbs and explode. I had tabbouli at dinner last night, and then read that too much parsley can cause uterine contractions. I swear, I give up on Google. If it's not raw meat or unpasteurized milks/cheeses, I'm eating it.  [-(
