Who do you tip?

Today I was talking to a co-worker about my upcoming tattoo. I told her what I was having done, and she asked what this parlor cost. I told her I was taking $300 which I figure will be plenty to include tip. She looked at me funny and asked why I was tipping my tattoo artist. She'd only ever heard of tipping a waiter or waitress. I didn't really know what to say because I don't really know my own reasons. My mom is a hairdresser who always got tips so I grew up tipping my hairdressers and estheticians and of course my waiter/waitress/delivery driver. I didn't tip my photographer when she did DD's one year shoot. I don't know why though it seems similar in service when I stop and think about it now...

Who do you all tip/don't tip and what is your reason?

Re: Who do you tip?

  • Anyone in a service based business.
Being a dog groomer, tips are highly appreciated. I get an average amount of $5-$10 per dog. That is plus my commission from the cost of the haircut.
With that being said... I have 9 tattoos. They aren't very big, or extravagant. My average cost of a tattoo I think I'd probably $150. And I usually tip $20.
But the amount you should tip is how ever much you feel they deserve for the work they did.

  • So would my photographer have been considered different than the service industry since she is providing me with goods after the fact more than a service, or would you tip your photographer after a session? I know we have a few photographers on here, chime in ladies :)

  • It depends. Is it a parlor with several artists who all charge the same amount based on size of tattoo, etc., or is it one person who charges by the hour? In the first case I would tip, but generally when they set their own rate and work alone a tip should not be expected.

  • I would def tip a tattoo artist.  I'm in the same boat, anyone in a service industry.  From my own standpoint, being a photographer, I do mostly get tipped at weddings.  Sometimes for shoots, but not often.  I in no way expect it but always appreciate it!!!
  • What about those little tip jars you see at food kiosks and such? Often I find myself leaving my small spare change and not an actual calculated tip at those, but leaving if I have no change. However, I know a LOT of people who never use them.

  • I tipped my tattoo artists. One was just a small one and only one sitting, I gave him 20. My other was four sittings so I tipped her 10 after the first three and the final I gave her 20. I tip waitstaff for sure, I sometimes tip counter workers (i.e. coffee shop, etc) IF the service was extra nice or I ordered a lot of different things. I tip garbage collectors around the holidays, as well as service technicians that have to come in around the holidays (exception if they are the business owner doing the house call). Bartenders and food delivery persons, always tip.
