pre-e/hellp syndrome mommas I have a question for you

Had my first ob appointment today, I'm 7wks 2days. Talked to my ob about things I can do to try and prevent having pre-e/hellp again, he said I can take a baby asprin a day, but there is no real way to prevent it. Have any pree hellp mommas done this or had it recommended? Do you think it helped or was it more of a peace of mind thing? I don't want to take any uneccesary medications, but I want to do everything I can to get to term this time. Advice?

  • Mine said the same thing. She said that she would have me start it when we started TTC. My MFM also said that she would recommend not exercising the first trimester. There isn't much to support it, but her reasoning is to reduce stress while the placenta is forming.

  • I have to be very active for my job, lifting and speed walking type things so I'm not sure if that counts as exercise or not, but I will definitely talk to my ob about it. There are slower paced areas I can work if need be, whatever it takes to get safely to term I will do. Ty for the input.

  • I had pre-e/HELLP for my first pregnancy as well. My OB told me about the baby aspirin, and recommended that I do a consult with one of the physicians at Maternal-Fetal Medicine who might know more. She recommended the baby aspirin as well. I thought that 12 weeks along was too late to start taking it, but the physician said she often likes patients to start it then anyway, so that's what I did. I take a single 83mg aspirin a day. I'm not far enough along that I can tell you whether or not it helped, but the physician did say that since there is no miracle cure for pre-e, every little thing that could help (with minimal associated risk) is worth doing. It's just important to know that you should stop taking the aspirin at 36 weeks. HTH.

  • hmmm interesting. I didn't think there was anything you can do to even try to help prevent this. I had pre-e and hellp with my twins. My GP told me there's not cure for it or way to prevent it. She also told me that it's likely to happen with your first pregnancy if it happens (and multiples increases the chances as well) and less likely to happen with subsequent pregnancies. I hope this is true because we are thinking about TTC a 3rd next year sometime.

  • Ty. My ob hasn't prescribed the baby asprin, he told me he would if I wanted to try it starting at my next appointment. We just discussed options to lower my risk, which turned out to be non existant :(. He said that was the only thing he could comfortably recommend without adding other uneccesary risks at this point, and that there is no hard evidence it works. I'm still researching and deciding if I should try it.

From what I understand, you're still higher risk for it happening again (compared to the general population/people who have never had pre-e), but still more likely NOT to get it again. My OB gave me a 1-in-4 recurrence as a reference point, but I've also read 15-20%.

Thanks for the insight from your OB. I hope we don't get it again. I'd really like to carry to term and have a VBAC.

  • My OB said that if I got it again it would most likely be less severe. Like I would have non severe pre-e at term rather than 32 weeks.

  • Ty. I was lucky enough to deliver vaginally with dd, I'm hoping to do the same this time only with a term baby.

There is definitely hope! 75-85% is still a very good majority! :)
