Newborns in gDiapers?

I am expecting my first little girl in December and am wanting to try to use gDiapers with the disposable inserts.
I purchased a bundle kit and ordered 6 gPants in size small instead of the newborn size because I figured she would be growing out of them fairly quick.
The newborn size is 6-10lbs and the small is 8-14lbs. The newborn gPants fasten up the front instead of the back, allowing room for the cord. The smalls fasten in the back.
I was wondering if anyone started out with the small gPants instead of the newborn?
To protect the cord would I be able to just roll down the gPant a little bit?
Thanks!

Re: Newborns in gDiapers?

  • I cloth diaper, and while I have no experience with gdiapers, I am thinking the same principal might apply...

One size diapers "say" they fit at 8lbs, but they rarely do. Even my nb sized diapers don't all fit from the beginning, even though they say 6lbs because nb legs are so tiny.

So if you can, I would either buy some nb gdiapers, or use disposables until your LO gets a big bigger.

  • I used NB gDiapers for the first 2 months and they were great, but their are a few things you should know. First off ALL gDiapers fasten in the back (meaning the velcro to hold the diapers on) the tinys (NB size) have extra snaps in the front to pull it down so it dosen't irratate the stump. No other gDiaper sizes have snaps.

Also the NB size is made to work with their disposable inserts because of not having the seperate pouch. If you use the cloth inserts they can (not always) wick out of the stiching holes. I wrote more about that on my blog here https://lovegreenbaby.wordpress.com/2013/08/26/tiny-gdiapers-what-you-need-to-know/

My little one is currently 3 months old and around 12.5 lbs the smalls still don't fit her skinny lets well so I only use the gDiapers as our 'disposables'

So in short I loved them for my newborn it was a great way to tansition in to cloth as a first time mom. But for me smalls wouldn't have worked it all depends on the size of your baby. Now she is in OS Gro Via hybrids they are a bit bulky but we love them.

  • Thanks, everyone!
  • Our small gDiapers took a long time to fit closely enough around the legs. I'm still a little shady on them -- I've had much better luck with pockets. It seems like a lot of the women on the CD board who have tried gDiapers don't love them, especially if their babies have thinner thighs. We used some inherited AI2s and prefolds and covers while waiting for her pockets and gDiapers to fit.

  • I should add that our baby was pretty good-sized -- 8 lbs 9 oz -- at birth.

  • I started using the small size this week when baby was just six days old. She was 8lb5oz at birth and is about 7lb11oz now. I've used the gDiaper with both the disposable inserts and using Green Mtn Diaper prefolds as a cloth insert. I've like them a lot. They've been easier to use than the prefold and cover (I haven't gotten pockets yet because I didn't think they'd fit a newborn very well).

For the cord stump -- on our baby it didn't turn out to be an issue. The gDiaper sat a little lower on the waist than her stump and I just didn't tighten super tight until it fell off at eight days.
  • My sis used gdiapers. She ended up buying huggies until she could use the small gdiaper size because of my niece's cord getting irritated. But loves them now.
