Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Transition to toddler bed & new room

I'm sure this question gets asked a lot...but I feel that everyone has a different story that may affect the answers.  If you know of any good websites/discussions, please direct me there!

We are due with #2 around late February/early March and DD will turn 2 on St. Patrick's Day.  :)  She is currently in her crib in her nursery.  Due to space limitations, we must keep that the nursery for #2 (the office does not have enough room for a crib, dresser/changing table, and comfy nursing chair, let alone a cubical for toys and books - also, it's so cutely decorated) and move DD into the office that we'll redo more girly for her, including purchasing a toddler bed.

Here comes my question:  I have heard that the transition to another room when baby gets here may not be good, but she may be too young to be in the toddler bed (suggested age 2) to transition before baby gets here.  What are your experiences, thoughts, advice for us?  We understand any transition (be it to another room and/or another bed) could be difficult, we would just like to hear what others have done that has been successful or not so successful (we also understand every child is different, but would still appreciate anything ya got to share!)

Thanks so much!!!

Re: Transition to toddler bed & new room

  • No personal experience here but we'll be in similar situtation. We're going to transition LO before 2nd baby comes even if it's "early" (like 22months). I'd much rather have the time to help her then than her feel like she's booted out of the crib plus I'll be exhausted with newborn and hurtin after birth.

I think as for new room just get DD involved in picking out the bedding, the wall color, etc. Let her see the room develop and let her know it's all special for her. The big thing is build the excitement! GL!

  • When DD2 was born, we kept her in our room in a cosleeper for the first several months. During this time, we transitioned DD1 into her new room. We moved DD2 into the old room after DD1 had been in her new room a couple of months. Are you going to have your new LO in your room for awhile? That will at least give you some extra time if you are...
