second opinion regarding donor eggs

Is it worth it to get a second opinion after your RE suggest donor eggs? I've had only had one IUI.

TTC since 2012

Dx : DOR

IUI #1 (Follistim switched over to Menopur injections) - BFN

Attempted IUI #2 (Menopur injections only cycle) better response on the Menopur then the Follistim combination treatment cycle however my cycle was still canceled due to my eggs not maturing and follicles not growing enough on a high dose of Menopur (Re said I could try a cycle of comid + ovidrel  for an IUI) for my second IUI( praying this works for us)

Clomid + Ovidrel protocol worked still a BFN as a result

Attempted cycle  Clomid  + Ovidrel protocol for IUI # 3 (Unable to do this cycle due to a cyst)

IUI # 3 Clomid+ Ovidrel protocol - BFP    Beta #1 752  Beta #2  1536    Beta #3 3797

EDD 10/27/14

Our sweet baby boy arrived on 9/2/14 TTC # 2 Conceived without help- June 2015 July 2015- Miscarriage ( blighted ovum)
March 2016 (ectopic pregnancy) :(

Re: second opinion regarding donor eggs

  • Absolutely.  Especially if you're on the young side (how old are you?) -- some 40+ ladies don't spend much time on OE treatments because they know their chances are likely to be slim.  Donor eggs are great but most of us don't go there until we've exhausted all other reasonable options.  I could have tried longer with my OE but I did enough to feel reasonably satisfied that there was no magic bullet for me.  I'm at my original clinic but I did get a second opinion in the meantime. Now I don't have any (serious) regrets.

I'm 34 my Re suggested donor eggs because I had two eggs and two follicle this last cycle for my second IUI but they didn't mature on the highest possible dose of Menopur. Last IUI that I did get to do I had one follicle that allowed me to get my first IUI completed. The thing with the last IUI that got me to my first IUI was that I was on Follistim didn't response I just happened to have Menopur(from a denied IVF cycle) so my RE started me on that and I started responding he told me this time around I didn't respond as well during IUI attempt #2 I'm wondering if I should have stayed on the lower dose that I was responding to better last time. Either way donor egg is a big thing and I want to make sure we are getting the same response from both RE's.

  • Definitely get a second opinion if you feel you have the time. I would be weary of jumping right to donor eggs after just 2 IUIs, but that is just me. In an IUI, they want to keep the number of eggs low, it may not be an indication of your response to IVF levels of meds. (unless you truly were at the highest dose for the IUI). It never hurts to get a second opinion to help you feel confident in whatever choice you make!

Yeah I just didn't know how common it was for people get second opinons with this sort of thing. I currently go to SGF but I'm thinking of getting my second opinion from a smaller fertility clinic.
Technically I only had one IUI completed, my second one was stalled before even having a trigger injection due to the lack of maturity with my eggs with the high level of menopur I was on. I'm getting ready to set up my follow up appointment I'm sure he will suggest donor eggs he said we have options I'm not sure what other options there will be. I just want to make sure I see another RE someone else before deciding where to go from here if that makes any sense my heart and my head are all over the place with all of this.

  • Yes. If you have any question in your mind go get a second opinion. You really don't want regrets down the road.

  • I would agree with LittleLady - you need to do whatever it takes to answer your questions.  My doctor told me from the beginning that donor eggs would likely be my best bet; however, she thought it was worth trying OE a few times since donor eggs are always an option but my own eggs were dwindling in numbers every month.  We finally went the DE route and sadly the donor didn't produce many eggs.  however we are very hopeful the 2 frozen ones are our take home baby.

Me:37 (DOR), DH: 40 (Normal) TTC #1 since Fall 2010
    2010-2012 - 7 rounds of Clomid, 4 IUI & 2 IVF - all BFN (2 chemical pregnancies)
    April 2013 fresh DEgg - 15R, 4F, 2 transferred = BFN.
    FET - 11/13
    Beta #1 11/23 = 247; Beta #2 11/25 = 538; Beta #3 11/29 = 5481 BFP!!!!!
    U/s #1 12/7 & U/s #2 12/16 = One perfect little heart beat!!
    EDD = 8/1/14

Goodluck with the two frozen ones.

Yeah, I just want to get a second opinion if both RE's have the same opinion then that is just what it is  but with so much invested I feel like I'd be foolish not to get a second opinion.
