A family (mom, dad, three sons and a daughter, kids between five and ten) came out of a hat store we passed in the mall.
The dad was dressed in the style I always think of as "wanna be rapper"-- hat with a straight brim, baggy shirt, chains, pants falling off-- NMS and i think it looks silly, but his body, his money, whatever.
His sons were decked out in three brand new hats in the same style and were all clearly proud. It was cute--they clearly wanted to look like dad.
Then I heard the girl say, "why couldn't I get a hat too?"
Dad and mom both told her that she can't wear hats because girls have to look pretty and hats look funny on her.
I believe I did judgy eyebrow and all.
Re: I just judged
I was at the grocery store, and these kids were begging their dad to buy some decorative fake pumpkins. He was like, "Oh, sorry, I can't buy those because your mother makes all of the decorating decisions, and she's not here." I thought it was kind of genius of him.
Anyway, I don't blame you for judging, but maybe the parents were just making excuses because they didn't want to buy another hat. But then that gets into the debate of - do they only spend money on "girly" things like pretty clothes and hairdos for the girl? Maybe they should just give them a monthly clothes budget and let the kids choose their own stuff, but I don't know because I haven't gotten to that point yet with DS.
