Anat Baniel Method

I searched for posts on this and found a couple but am interested in updates. Has anyone tried this therapy? We are very interested but struggling with how at odds the approach is with our traditional PT/OT. Ex: Anat is extremely against tummy time and for weeks all Anna's PT and OT did was put her on her tummy. Anat also doesn't want Anna sitting until she can push up to a sit by herself, whereas her PT will put her in a sitting position to work on other things like weight bearing on her arms.

For reference, Anat and our local ABM practitioner agree that Anna hasn't mapped her left side and doesn't have awareness of her lower back. I can see that they're right in the way she rolls from her tummy to her back, entirely led by her chest and using brute force and her stomach muscles to flip the rest of the way over. She does not roll from her back to her tummy. She tries, but only manages to arch her neck and back while her lower half goes stiff.

Re: Anat Baniel Method

  • I researched AB method and even had a Feldenkrais(Anat's teacher) trained PT though EI. I totally get the mapping thing yada, yada, yada...but to tell parents to stop with traditional, researched PT methods is irresponsible.

If it was so revolutionary wouldn't EVERYONE be doing it? and the price is astronomical......

I am not saying that I wouldn't try it if my child was not responding to traditional stuff or was very affected. I totally would since, clearly, I looked into it as an option.

Our feldenkrais PT didn't get Nate walking. An intense 4 week session of daily PT for one hour did the job though. AB/feldenkrais therapies are not covered by insurance. We didn't have the 200 bucks per session to pay out of pocket, so traditional PT it was. My husband was in no way interested in paying for a therapy that didn't have a bunch of studies to back it up.

  • Thanks @Assembly_Reqd

Some of what you wrote is totally what I'm thinking, why isn't everyone into this?! Why doesn't our top rated neuro know who Anat Baniel is? But I also know that there are just so many theories out there and it's impossible to know them all, not to mention that everyone is so different and what works for one will not work for all.

Our practitioner, who had also completed the 4 yr feldenkrais training hasn't mentioned stopping traditional therapies so my plan is to try to work with our PT to make them as complimentary as possible.
