I had a small vent about a person at the grocery store and being able to afford 30$ worth of cigarettes and then some crazy girl told me I was a bad mom because I work and left my kid. And I was jealous because she had figured out how to abuse the system to stay at home.
Anyways. If you need the help you need it. If you are an abuser you take offence to my stance.

But when you use that generalization as a statement against the entirety of welfare, you're making a huge mistake. 

There are douchebags everywhere and in every walk of life.  The number of people who legitimately abuse the various welfare programs are incredibly small compared to the number of people on the programs. 

Saying what you said is the equivalent of saying all black people are in gangs or all Asian people are good at math.

The abuse stories? Embellished since the 80s.  Ronald Reagan started the myth of the "welfare queen" and it's been widely renounced as complete bullshit.  

So yeah.  When I see someone at the grocery store with a fancy car, an iPhone, and carrying a coach bag assume that they had all of those things before they went on welfare.  I also assume they did their own nails and possibly their own hair. 

Assumptions make you look like an ass.

FTR: I know someone who fits the story of the "Welfare queen".  I blame her for being a complete dummy and I blame her mom for enabling her.

I'm no expert on the American welfare system (I literally know nothing about it, being Canadian).

This specific person that they are talking about actually did abuse and was open about it. That's how they knew she abused. She posted several times a day about how she spent her government money. I can't remember much specifics but there was a few "I need a new manicure, mines chipped" and "got my lip pierced today!" kind of scenarios. 

I got the feel that when the convo first happened (on the Buzz) there was a lot of bashing of THIS woman, but not all welfare/WIC/whatever users. And maybe just the residual feelings from that get generalized since no one wants to go into detail all over again about THAT user. So it gets mixed up with having hatred towards all users of government assistance. 

At least I hope so because we have depended on assistance before, and I am also a full time SAHM.

I'm a SAHM, my husband works FT.. I worked until 2 days before pushing out the first one.

In fact, these scenarios we speak of, are NOT just stories - my MIL and SIL are #1 abusers of the government, both complainers, hate working and feel everything is owed to them "just because" others get things for "free" so yeah, I stay away from them as much as I possibly can.
