WWYD- double electric to manual pump?

I EBF DS2 who is almost 9 months. So this is sort of WM related since I use a double electric pump while working, so I am accustom to it. DH and I are going away for the weekend next month. I will have my normal pump with me and plan on pumping every 3-4 hours to maintain my supply. Most of the day, it should be fairly easy to accomplish this bc of what we have planned. But I was also wondering if I should also bring a manual pump for a quick session here and there if I can't make it back to the hotel room or car. I can keep it in my purse, and even find ice to put the milk on if it's too hot to last the 8 hours it should be okay at "room temp". I guess I am just concerned it will be a waste of money and time if I am not going to "respond" well to it. Thoughts? Experience?

  • In my experience, the manual pump does take some practice because it is very different.  But they aren't too expensive, so if you think you might have a need for it I would say why not.  Just get it early and try it out first to get the hang of it.

  • I also used a double electri on a daily basis with both kids. I bought a medela harmony manual pump for a wedding. It was small enough for a purse. I didn't test it out ahead of time but did set it up and make sure I knew how to use it. It is much slower obviously but it wasn't less effective. If you really think you might need it jut buy it, it's cheap. I ended up using mine again another time.

  •  I liked having a manual pump for "emergencies" or special use. I used one a couple times for weddings and had it on hand a few other times just in case I ended up having to pump. It was easier for me to bring that than to worry about how to get all set up somewhere with my double electric.

The pump was cheap, so even though I only used it a few times I thought it was worth it.

  • I keep the hand pump the hospital gave us in the car.. On the occasion that I managed to forget my pump at home but bring all the bottles to work, it came in handy. PITA, but it saved me from having to drive home.
