Do babies become reliant on white noise to fall asleep

I am wondering if anyone has used a white noise machine and then tries to phase it out.

  • I'm also curious. We BLAST it to get our 6 week old to sleep...works like a charm, but I am wondering if we are creating a bad habit.

  • I actually think its the opposite. With DD1 she was a horrible sleeper. We didn't know about white noise machines until she was 4-5mo old. We followed what everyone told us about not being quiet around baby, make noise so they get used to it blah blah blah. None of that worked for us, she was such a light sleeper everything woke her up.

I found out about white noise machines in here and she finally slept through us doing things in the house (dishes etc) b/c the white noise drowned out the noise we were making. I also am able to hear the white noise through the monitor and I sleep better b/c of it. DD1 still uses one at night now at 4 because of how light she sleeps. Some people are heavy sleepers and some light. She doesn't need it per say b/c she will sleep w/o it but then everything wakes her up

  • I think my son is dependent on white noise to sleep, but I don't really care. I figure it's not the end of the world if he needs it.
  • I've always used white noise for myself to fall asleep. Didnt even worry if it would become habit for lo! Dont think it a huge problem if so. Helps me anyway. :)

  • I think it's way better than them being dependent on rocking, back patting, walking around, etc. I mean worst case your LO becomes dependent on it, no harm, no foul right? We still find white noise useful with our older ones so they don't wake each other up, or hear the tv, etc. No idea when we'll wean 'em off it... I still use a box fan on my room for that purpose, ha.

  • My DD weaned at six months to a crib light and music machine that shut off after 15 min...you should be fine:)
After three miscarriages and one ectopic pregnancy we are currently pursuing adoption. " Born not from our flesh, but born in our heart. You were longed for and wanted and loved from the start."
  • In the beginning, white noise was the only thing that kept him calm when we weren't holding him. Every so often we would try to not use it and he would be fine. He still has his moments and in a pinch we use it to calm him down. He is 10 weeks.
  • If The choice is between pacifier or white noise machine that accompanies my kids to university, I pick the white noise machine.
